James Smith (September 17, 1719 – July 11, 1806) was an important person in early American history. He was one of the Founding Fathers, a group of leaders who helped create the United States. Early Life and Education
James Smith was born in Ireland in 1719. When he was about 10 years old, his family moved to America. They settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania. James went to school at the Philadelphia Academy.
After his schooling, James Smith decided to become a lawyer. He studied law with his older brother, George. Once he finished his studies, he became a lawyer in Pennsylvania. He first worked near a town called Shippensburg. Later, he moved his law practice closer to York.
A Leader in the American Revolution
As tensions grew between the American colonies and Great Britain, James Smith became a strong supporter of American independence. He joined the local militia, which was a group of citizen soldiers. He even became a captain in this group.
Smith played a key role in the events leading up to the American Revolution.
- In 1775, he was chosen to attend an important meeting in Philadelphia. This meeting helped plan how Pennsylvania would support the fight for freedom.
- In 1776, he helped write Pennsylvania's new constitution. This document set up the rules for how the state would be governed.

James Smith passed away on July 11, 1806, when he was 87 years old. He was buried in York, Pennsylvania, at the First Presbyterian Churchyard. His legacy lives on as one of the brave individuals who risked everything for American freedom. Today, a dormitory at the University of Delaware is named in his honor.
