Jared Anthony Dudley (born July 10, 1985) is an American basketball coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets in the National Basketball Association (NBA). As a player, he was a forward. He played college basketball for the Boston College Eagles.
Dudley was chosen as the 22nd player in the 2007 NBA draft by the Charlotte Bobcats. After playing for the Bobcats, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns in December 2008. He played five seasons with the Suns. Later, he joined the Los Angeles Clippers in 2013 and the Milwaukee Bucks in 2014. In 2015, Dudley was traded to the Washington Wizards. He returned to Phoenix in 2016 for two more years. In 2018, he moved to the Brooklyn Nets. In 2019, he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. Dudley won an NBA championship with the Lakers in 2020. He retired in August 2021 and became a coach. In July 2025, he became the top assistant coach for the Denver Nuggets.

College Basketball Career
Jared Dudley played college basketball for the Boston College Eagles. During the 2004–05 season, he earned the nickname "Junkyard Dog". This nickname was given to him because he was tough and always went after the ball.
On November 29, 2006, he scored 30 points against Michigan State. His highest score in a college game was 36 points. He achieved this against Villanova on January 19, 2005. In his final year, he averaged 19 points and 3 assists per game. After his senior year, Dudley was named the ACC Player of the Year for 2007. He was also chosen as a second-team All-American.
Professional Basketball Journey
Playing for the Charlotte Bobcats (2007–2008)
On June 28, 2007, the Charlotte Bobcats picked Jared Dudley 22nd overall in the NBA draft. He quickly became a regular player for the Bobcats. He made his first start on November 24, 2007, against the Boston Celtics. In that game, he scored 11 points and got nine rebounds. He became an important player for the team, often starting games. He finished the 2007–08 season averaging 5.8 points per game. He played as a power forward in his first year and then as a small forward in his second year with the Bobcats.
Dudley played 20 games for the Bobcats in 2008. Then, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns. In those 20 games, he averaged 5.4 points, which was his lowest career average.
Time with the Phoenix Suns (2008–2013)
Jared Dudley joined the Suns on December 18, 2008. He was traded along with Jason Richardson. In return, the Bobcats received Raja Bell and Boris Diaw. Dudley became known for making fun videos of interviews with his Suns teammates. He posted these videos on Twitter under names like JMZ or JSPN. These were funny versions of popular sports and news sites. That season, Dudley played in 48 games for the Suns. He averaged 3.0 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 5.5 points per game.
In the 2009–10 season, Dudley was a key player in the 2010 NBA Playoffs. He played in all 16 playoff games for the Suns. He shot very well from the three-point line, making 42.4% of his shots. However, the Suns lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.
The Suns did not make the playoffs in the 2010–11 season. Still, Dudley had a great year, averaging a career-high 10.6 points per game. He played in all 82 games and started 15 of them. In the shorter 2011–12 season, Dudley improved even more. He averaged a career-high 12.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. He started 60 games for the Suns as a shooting guard. After this season, NBA TV gave Dudley the first "BIG Award." He won because of his great use of social media like Twitter.
For the 2012–13 NBA season, Dudley and Jermaine O'Neal were named captains of the Suns. On December 27, 2012, Dudley scored a career-high 36 points against the New York Knicks. He made 11 of 17 shots, including 5 three-pointers. He also had five rebounds and three assists.
Playing for the Los Angeles Clippers (2013–2014)
On July 10, 2013, Dudley was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. This was part of a three-team trade. The Milwaukee Bucks received draft picks, and the Phoenix Suns received players like Eric Bledsoe. Dudley started as the small forward for the Clippers. However, on January 20, 2014, Matt Barnes took his starting spot.
Playing for the Milwaukee Bucks (2014–2015)
On August 26, 2014, Dudley was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. He played as the team's shooting guard that season. On December 26, 2014, Dudley made history. He became the first player to shoot 100% from the field in a game with at least 10 shots and 3 three-pointers. He made all 10 of his field goals and all 4 of his three-point shots. He scored 24 points, had 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists. This happened in a big 107–77 win over the Atlanta Hawks.
Playing for the Washington Wizards (2015–2016)
On July 9, 2015, Dudley was traded to the Washington Wizards. He had surgery in July to fix a back problem and was out for a few months. Dudley played much of the 2015–16 season as the team's power forward. This was because the Wizards needed more players at that position.
Return to Phoenix (2016–2018)
On July 8, 2016, Dudley signed with the Phoenix Suns again. He started the 2016–17 season as the Suns' power forward. After seven games, he moved to the bench. On November 9, he scored a season-high 19 points in a win against the Detroit Pistons. On March 24, 2017, he had a season-high 10 assists. On April 5, he scored 19 points again. In June 2017, Dudley had surgery on his left toe. This meant he could not play for three to four months.
Playing for the Brooklyn Nets (2018–2019)
On July 20, 2018, Dudley was traded to the Brooklyn Nets. He missed 16 games in early 2019 due to a strained hamstring. During the 2019 NBA Playoffs, he had a disagreement with Philadelphia 76ers player Ben Simmons. He also got into a small fight with other 76ers players. Dudley was fined $25,000 for this incident.
Playing for the Los Angeles Lakers (2019–2021)
On July 7, 2019, Dudley signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. On August 13, 2020, he had a season-high five assists. On December 11, he was removed from a game against the Orlando Magic after a fight on the court. His teammate LeBron James praised Dudley, saying he would always stand up for his teammates. Dudley scored a season-high nine points and had three rebounds in that game. Dudley won his only NBA championship as a player when the Lakers beat the Miami Heat in the 2020 NBA Finals.
On November 30, 2020, Dudley signed another one-year contract with the Lakers. On December 27, he scored a season-high 3 points. On March 14, 2021, the Lakers announced that Dudley had a knee injury. He chose to do rehab instead of surgery. He returned to play on May 16, 2021, after missing 33 games.
Coaching Career
Dallas Mavericks (2021–2025)
On August 24, 2021, Jared Dudley announced he was retiring from playing basketball after 14 seasons. He then joined Jason Kidd's coaching team with the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant coach. Dudley had an important role on the Mavericks' coaching staff.
Denver Nuggets (2025–Present)
On July 3, 2025, it was reported that Dudley joined the Denver Nuggets. He became their top assistant coach under David Adelman.
Personal Life
Jared Dudley is a Christian. He appeared in the comedy film Movie 43 (2013) as a basketball player. Other NBA players also appeared in the movie. On February 2, 2021, Dudley and Carvell Wallace released a short book. It was mostly about his own life and was called Inside the NBA Bubble: A Championship Season under Quarantine. The book shared his experiences and feelings about the Lakers winning the NBA Finals inside the special 2020 NBA Bubble at Walt Disney World.
