Jarvis Lamar Varnado (born March 1, 1988) is an American professional basketball player. He is known for being a great defensive player. Jarvis is especially good at blocking shots because of his long arms. He currently plays for Piratas de La Guaira in the Venezuelan Basketball League.

Early Life and High School Basketball
Jarvis Varnado grew up in Brownsville, Tennessee. He went to Haywood High School and graduated in 2006. During his time there, he was considered a top basketball player. Experts ranked him as one of the best power forwards in the country.
College Career at Mississippi State
Varnado played college basketball for Mississippi State University. He was part of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), which is a big group of college teams. He played from 2006 to 2010 in NCAA Division I, the highest level of college basketball.
Setting Block Records
Jarvis was amazing at blocking shots. In the 2007–08 season, he led all college players in the NCAA with 157 blocks. This tied a record set by the famous player Shaquille O'Neal in the SEC. The very next season, 2008–09, Jarvis broke his own record with 170 blocks!
On November 21, 2009, Jarvis became the all-time leader in blocks for the SEC. He passed Shaquille O'Neal's record of 412 career blocks. Later, on February 24, 2010, Jarvis made history again. He became the all-time leading shot-blocker in NCAA Division I history, passing Wojciech Myrda's record with 535 career blocks.
Awards and Achievements
Jarvis Varnado was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year three years in a row (2008, 2009, and 2010). He was the first player ever to do this! He is also one of only two college players in history to reach a special milestone: 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 500 blocks. The other player to achieve this was David Robinson.
Professional Basketball Journey
Jarvis Varnado started his professional career after being drafted by the Miami Heat in 2010. He has played for many teams around the world.
Starting in Italy and Israel
After being drafted, Jarvis first played for Carmatic Pistoia in Italy. He played well, averaging 15.4 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game. In 2011, he moved to Israel to play for Hapoel Jerusalem. He also played for Virtus Roma in Italy in 2012.
NBA and D-League Experience
Jarvis joined the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the NBA Development League (now called the G League) in 2012. He was even named the D-League Player of the Week.
He then had short stints in the NBA. He played for the Boston Celtics in late 2012. In 2013, he returned to the Miami Heat, the team that drafted him. With the Heat, Jarvis won his first NBA championship in 2013 when they beat the San Antonio Spurs.
After his time with the Heat, Jarvis played for the Iowa Energy in the D-League. He was even chosen for the 2014 NBA D-League All-Star Game. He also played briefly for the Chicago Bulls and the Philadelphia 76ers in 2014. With the 76ers, he had a career-high game with 9 points and 6 blocks.
