Jasper is a small town located in Steuben County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,418 people lived there. The town is named after William Jasper, a brave military hero from Fort Moultrie.

History of Jasper
The very first settlers arrived in the Jasper area around 1807. These early pioneers helped build the community.
The town of Jasper was officially created in 1837. It was formed from parts of two nearby towns: Troupsburg and Canisteo. Later, in 1848, some of Jasper's land was used to help form the Town of Greenwood.
A famous ceramics artist named Frederick Walrath was born in Jasper in 1871. He grew up in the town and became well-known for his art. He passed away in 1921 during a visit back home.
Geography and Location
Jasper covers a total area of about 52.7 square miles (136.4 square kilometers). Almost all of this area is land.
Two important roads meet near Jasper village. New York State Route 417 runs east and west. New York State Route 36 runs north and south. These two highways briefly join together in the area.
