History of Jayuya Abajo
Jayuya Abajo has an interesting past! After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's connected to the U.S. but isn't a state.
In 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. At that time, Jayuya Abajo was part of another town called Utuado, Puerto Rico. The census showed that 3,597 people lived in Jayuya Abajo.
