Jean Castex (born 25 June 1965) is a French politician. He was the Prime Minister of France from July 2020 to May 2022. Before becoming Prime Minister, he was the mayor of a small town called Prades for twelve years. He was chosen for the role of Prime Minister by President Emmanuel Macron. After leaving this important job, he became the president of a state-owned transport company called RATP in November 2022.

Jean Castex's Political Journey

Jean Castex started his political career in local government. He was elected as the mayor of Prades in 2008. This was a big step for him.

Early Roles in Government

From 2010 to 2011, Castex worked as a top assistant for the Health Minister, Xavier Bertrand. He then became the Secretary-General of the Élysée, which is like a chief of staff for the President, under President Nicolas Sarkozy from 2011 to 2012.

Local and National Responsibilities

Castex also held important roles in his home region. He was a regional councillor for Languedoc-Roussillon from 2010 to 2015. Since 2015, he has been a department councillor for Pyrénées-Orientales.

In 2017, he was given a special job to help prepare for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Paris. He also became the President of the National Sports Agency. In April 2020, he helped coordinate France's plan to ease out of the lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic in France.

Becoming Prime Minister

Jean Castex was a member of a political party called The Republicans until early 2020. On 3 July 2020, after the previous Prime Minister, Édouard Philippe, resigned, President Emmanuel Macron chose Castex to be the new Prime Minister. His appointment was seen as a move to continue policies that were generally considered to be in the center-right. He then announced the members of his government a few days later.

Resignation from Prime Minister

After President Macron was re-elected in April 2022, Jean Castex kept a promise he had made. He resigned from his position as Prime Minister. His government also resigned at the same time, on 16 May 2022.

Life After Being Prime Minister

After leaving the role of Prime Minister, Jean Castex continued to serve in important positions.

New Leadership Roles

His successor, Élisabeth Borne, nominated him to lead the board of directors for the French agency that funds transport infrastructure (AFITF). He held this position until November 2022. On 28 November 2022, he started his new role as the PDG (Chairman and CEO) of the RATP. This company manages public transport in Paris and its surrounding areas.

Personal Life

Jean Castex comes from the Gers region of France. His last name, Castex, means 'castles' in the Gascon language. He is married to Sandra Ribelaygue, and they have four daughters.

Language and Interests

Castex speaks Catalan fluently. He is known for supporting the Catalan identity in Southern France and other regional cultures. He is also friends with a former trade union leader, Jean-Claude Mailly, and a doctor named Patrick Pelloux.

Health

In November 2021, Jean Castex tested positive for COVID-19.
