High School Football Journey
Jeff Fuller started out playing basketball when he was younger. He began playing football during his first year of high school. By his second year, he had earned a spot on the varsity team. This is the main team for experienced players.
During his junior year, Jeff caught 27 passes for 327 yards. He also scored three touchdowns. In his senior year, he caught 37 passes for 448 yards. He scored five touchdowns that season. For both his junior and senior years, he received special honors. He was named Second-team All-District 9-4A.
Choosing a College Team
When colleges were looking to recruit him, Jeff first decided to play for the Oklahoma Sooners. He really wanted to play for Texas A&M. This was partly because his father had played there too. However, the coach at Texas A&M at the time, Dennis Franchione, used an "option offense." This style of play didn't use wide receivers as much.
While Jeff was still committed to the Sooners, Texas A&M got a new coach. His name was Mike Sherman. Coach Sherman called Jeff the very day he was hired. Sherman used a "pro-style offense" that used wide receivers a lot. He convinced Jeff to change his mind and commit to the Aggies.
Jeff felt a bit bad about changing his commitment. But he said he wanted to be happy for four years. He felt he made the right choice. After Texas A&M signed all their new players, Jeff Fuller was their highest-ranked recruit. This was according to Rivals.com, a sports website. Jeff even finished high school early. This allowed him to join A&M's spring football practices.
College Football Success
Jeff Fuller earned special recognition in college. He received All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors in 2008 and 2009. In 2009, he missed four games. This was because of a cracked bone in his right leg.
Breaking Records
During the 2010 season, Jeff Fuller and his teammate Ryan Swope broke a school record. They both caught 72 passes. This beat a record that had stood for 24 years. It was previously held by Rod Bernstine.
That same season, Jeff broke another Texas A&M record. He set a new record for the most touchdown catches in school history. The old record was 19 touchdowns. It was held by Bob Long, who played from 1966 to 1968. Jeff also became only the second player in school history to gain 2,000 receiving yards.
On November 1, 2010, Jeff said he planned to return for his senior year. He decided not to enter the 2011 NFL draft early. He wanted to graduate from Texas A&M in the spring of 2012. For his amazing 2010 season, he received first-team All-Big 12 Honors.
