Jenbach is a cool town, or municipality, located in the Schwaz area of Tyrol, a state in Austria. It's a place with a long history and some interesting facts!

What's in a Name? The Story of Jenbach

Many people in Jenbach think the name "Jenbach" means "Beyond the brook." But older names like "Umbach" suggest it might mean "Around the brook." This makes sense because Jenbach grew up around the Kasbach stream.

People who live in Jenbach are called "Jenbacher." If you speak the Bavarian dialect, you might hear "Jenbach" pronounced as "Jembåch."

Where is Jenbach?

Jenbach is located in a beautiful part of Austria. It shares its borders with a few other towns.

Nearby Towns

Jenbach's Journey Through Time

Jenbach has been around for a very long time! The first homes here date back to the end of the early Bronze Age. This was a time when people started using metal tools. It was also settled during the early La Tène culture, which was part of the Iron Age.

Early Beginnings and Mining

The town was first officially mentioned in a document in 1269. It was called "Ymbach" back then. Around 1410, a rich family called the Fuggers built furnaces here. They used these furnaces to process silver and copper. These metals came from mines near Schwaz.

After the silver and copper ran out, people started processing iron ore instead. This early industrial setup was privately owned until 1865. Then, the government took it over. In 1870, it was sold again to a company called Salzburg-Tiroler-Montangesellschaft.

Modernizing the Factories

In 1881, Julius and Theodor Reitlinger bought the factory. They made many improvements and brought it up to date. The factory stayed in their family until 1938.

After that, it was taken over by the government. Later, it was given to Ernst Heinkel during a difficult period in history. After 1945, the factory was not returned to its previous owners. Instead, it stayed under public control.

Jenbach During World War II

In February 1945, during World War II, Jenbach's railway station was bombed. About 31 tons of bombs were dropped. This was done to stop the Reichsbahn (the German railway) from moving war supplies. The bombing destroyed 35 houses and sadly, 8 people lost their lives.

During the war, the Heinkel factories in Jenbach made important parts for military aircraft. They produced rocket motors for the Me 163B Komet, which was the first rocket-powered fighter plane. They also made parts for V-2 missiles. These missiles were fired at cities in southern England.

End of the War and Peace

In April and May 1945, some German military units moved towards Tyrol. They were trying to avoid the French army. On May 2nd, they left the area, leaving some weapons behind.

The mayor of Jenbach, Mr. Somweber, and a leader of the Austrian resistance, Mr. Nentwich, worked together. They talked to the military units to get them to leave. They also talked to the Allied forces to stop the air raids on Jenbach. This helped bring peace back to the town.

Jenbach Today

Today, the GE Jenbacher AG is a very important company in Jenbach. It is a world leader in making gas engines.

Getting Around: Jenbach's Unique Railway Station

The railway station in Jenbach is very special! It's the only place in Austria where three different types of railways meet. Each railway uses a different width of tracks, called a "gauge."

Three Unique Railways

  • The ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen): This is Austria's main railway system. It uses the standard track width.
  • The Achenseebahn: This is Europe's oldest cog railway that still uses steam power! It uses the Riggenbach system to climb steep hills. Its tracks are a bit narrower than standard.
  • The Zillertalbahn: This railway uses an even narrower track width.
