Jeremy Roger Hansen, born on January 27, 1976, is a Canadian astronaut. He is also a fighter pilot and a physicist. He joined the Canadian Space Agency in 2009. Another astronaut, David Saint-Jacques, was chosen at the same time.
Before becoming an astronaut, Hansen was a captain in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He flew CF-18 fighter jets. He has since been promoted to the rank of colonel.
Jeremy Hansen has been chosen for the Artemis II mission. This mission will fly around the Moon in spring 2026. If it succeeds, he will be the first non-American astronaut to travel beyond Earth's orbit.
Early Life and School
Jeremy Hansen was born in London, Ontario, on January 27, 1976. He grew up on a farm near Ailsa Craig. Later, his family moved to Ingersoll, Ontario, where he went to high school.
After finishing high school, Hansen went to the Royal Military College of Canada. This college is in Kingston, Ontario. In 1999, he earned a degree in space science. He graduated with high honors.
In 2000, Hansen continued his studies at the Royal Military College. He earned a master's degree in physics. His research focused on tracking satellites from far away.
Astronaut Career
In 2013, Jeremy Hansen took part in special training called ESA CAVES. This training happened in caves in Sardinia. He trained with other astronauts, including Satoshi Furukawa and Paolo Nespoli. This helped them prepare for space missions.
On June 10, 2014, NASA announced another exciting training for Hansen. He became an aquanaut for the NEEMO 19 mission. This mission took place in an underwater laboratory. It lasted seven days, starting on September 7, 2014.
On April 3, 2023, it was announced that Jeremy Hansen would be part of the Artemis II mission. This mission will take him to the Moon. He will be the first Canadian to travel that far into space.
Personal Life
Jeremy Hansen is married to Catherine Hansen. They have three children together.
Awards and Honors
Jeremy Hansen has received many awards for his service and achievements:
- Canadian Forces' Decoration – This award was given to him in October 2006 for 12 years of service.
- Canadian air force pilot wings – He earned his pilot wings in May 2002.
- Clancy Scheldrup Memorial Trophy – He received this award in 2001 for being an outstanding graduate.
- Air Cadet League of Canada Award – In May 1999, he was recognized as the top air force graduate from the Royal Military College of Canada.
- Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (FRCGS) – This is a special honor from a geography society.
- Gold Medal of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society – Another top award from the geography society.
- Canada's flag bearer for the Coronation of Charles III and Camilla – He carried Canada's flag at the King's coronation.
- Calgary Stampede Parade Marshal – He led the famous Calgary Stampede Parade in 2023.
