Girls' Generation (소녀시대) is a very popular K-pop girl group from South Korea. They were formed by SM Entertainment in 2007. The group started with nine members.

The current members are Yoona, Tiffany, Yuri, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, Seohyun, Taeyeon (who is the leader), and Sunny. Jessica was a member, but she left the group in 2014.

Fans often call the group SNSD. This is a short way to say their Korean name, So Nyeo Shi Dae. Their fans are called "S♡NE" (소원), which sounds like "So-won". This word means "wish" in Korean.

History

Early Days and Debut

Before Girls' Generation officially started, each member trained hard. They learned how to sing and dance. Some members also trained in acting and modeling. A few of the girls even appeared in TV ads or other music videos before joining the group.

In July 2007, Girls' Generation had their first performance. It was on a TV show called M! Countdown. They sang their first song, "Into the New World" (다시 만난 세계). This song became their very first single. A TV show called "M.Net's Girls Go To School" showed how the girls prepared for their debut.

In August 2007, the single "Into the New World" was officially released. It also included two other songs, "Beginning" and "Perfect for You". The group then started to perform their new song on popular music shows like SBS's Inkigayo and KBS's Music Bank.

Later in 2007, Girls' Generation released their first full album. It was also called Girls' Generation. The main song from the album was "Girls' Generation" (소녀시대). This song was a cover of an old hit from the 1980s. The album became very popular.

In early 2008, they promoted another song from the album called "Kissing You". The music video for this song featured Donghae from Super Junior. "Kissing You" became a number one hit on many music charts. In March 2008, the album was re-released with a new name, Baby Baby.

2008–2010: Big Hits and Japanese Debut

In 2008, the group starred in a TV show called "Factory Girl". In this show, the girls worked as interns at a fashion magazine. They also appeared in many TV ads during this time.

In January 2009, Girls' Generation released their first mini-album, Gee. The song "Gee" quickly became a huge hit. It reached number one on many music charts very fast. "Gee" broke records for staying at number one for a long time on music shows. It was number one on M.net for 8 weeks and on KBS Music Bank for 9 weeks! "Gee" was the best-selling song for the first half of 2009.

After a short break, SM Entertainment announced that the girls would return with a new song. This song was called "Sowoneul Malhaebwa (Genie)" (소원을 말해봐), which means "Tell Me Your Wish". The mini-album was released in June 2009. For this album, the girls often wore cool marine uniforms. "Genie" also became a number one hit.

From June to November 2009, Girls' Generation starred in a TV show called "Girls' Generation's Hello Baby". In this show, they took care of a baby boy named Cho Kyungsan. They learned what it was like to be mothers.

On January 23, 2010, the group released a teaser for their new song "Oh!". Their full album, also called "Oh!", came out on January 28, 2010. The concept for this album was cheerleading.

In March 2010, a new version of the album was released. It featured a "Dark" concept. The main song was "Run Devil Run".

On August 25, Girls' Generation had their first showcase in Tokyo, Japan. On September 7, they released their first Japanese single, "GENIE". This was followed by "GEE" in October.

In October 2010, the girls released their third mini-album, "Hoot" (훗). The music video for "Hoot" was released the next day.

By the end of 2010, Girls' Generation had won many important awards. They won the "Disk Daesang Award" at the Golden Disk Awards. They were the first girl group to win both the Daesang and Digital Daesang awards. They were also named "Artist of the Year" by many different music charts.

2011: Japanese Success and More Awards

In January 2011, Girls' Generation released a song for Intel called "Visual Dreams".

On January 20, at the 20th Seoul Music Awards, the group won many awards. They received an Artist of the Year award, a Bonsang prize, a Popularity award, and a Hallyu award. Girls' Generation became one of only a few artists in Korean music history to win two Artist of the Year awards in a row at the Seoul Music Awards. They are also the only girl group to win Artist of the Year awards at the Seoul Music Awards, Melon Music Awards, and Golden Disk Awards for two years in a row.

On April 27, they fully released their third Japanese single, "Mr. Taxi/Run Devil Run".

On June 1, 2011, they released their first Japanese studio album, Girls' Generation. This album had 12 songs, including Japanese versions of their hits like "Genie" and "Gee". The album sold over 100,000 copies in just two days! This broke a record for Korean girl groups in Japan.

2011-Now: Changes and New Music

On September 30, 2014, Jessica announced that she was no longer part of Girls' Generation.

In August 2015, Girls' Generation released their fifth album, Lion Heart.

In August 2017, SNSD released Holiday Night. This album celebrated their 10th anniversary as a group.

On October 10, 2017, Seohyun, Sooyoung, and Tiffany left SM Entertainment. They wanted to try new things in their careers. However, they are still members of Girls' Generation.
