Tiffany Young's Early Life and Career Beginnings
Growing Up and Discovering Music
Tiffany Young was born Stephanie Young Hwang on August 1, 1989, in San Francisco. She grew up in Diamond Bar, California. Her family included her father, an older sister, and an older brother. Her mother passed away when Tiffany was 12 years old.
Tiffany was inspired by the K-pop artist BoA. Her brother encouraged her to join a singing contest when she was 15. A representative from SM Entertainment saw her perform. She auditioned and was accepted as a trainee. Just three weeks later, she moved to South Korea to begin her training.
Becoming a K-pop Star
Tiffany attended Korea Kent Foreign School while training at SM Entertainment for almost four years. In August 2007, she officially became a member of the South Korean girl group Girls' Generation. She chose the stage name Tiffany, which was the name her mother originally wanted to give her at birth.
Besides her work with Girls' Generation, Tiffany also sang songs for other projects and movie soundtracks. She also hosted several television shows. In 2008, Tiffany had a problem with her vocal cords and needed medical help. This issue came back in 2009 and 2010, causing her to take short breaks from her activities.
Girls' Generation TTS and Solo Music
Joining a Subgroup and Acting
In late 2011 and early 2012, Tiffany started acting in musicals. She played the main role of Carmen Diaz in the Korean version of the musical Fame. Carmen was a student who worked hard to become a star.
In April 2012, a smaller group from Girls' Generation was formed. It was called TTS, and it included Tiffany, Taeyeon, and Seohyun. Their first album, Twinkle, was a big hit. It reached number one on the Gaon Album Chart and sold over 140,000 copies in South Korea that year. The group later released two more albums: Holler (2014) and Dear Santa (2015). In November 2013, Tiffany was a contestant on the TV show Fashion King Korea. On this show, celebrities worked with top designers to create fashion. Tiffany finished in third place.
Starting a Solo Career
In the summer of 2015, Tiffany began working on her own music. She saw this as a new step in her music journey. She had been writing music since 2014 and found it exciting to share her own songs. Tiffany mentioned that Taeyeon from Girls' Generation helped her a lot with preparing her album. Tiffany and Taeyeon have been close friends since Tiffany moved to South Korea in 2004.
Tiffany's first solo album, I Just Wanna Dance, came out in May 2016. This made her the second member of Girls' Generation to release solo music. The album received good reviews. Billboard magazine said the album helped Tiffany show a new side of herself as an artist. The album had more American influences than typical K-pop. It reached number three on the Billboard World Albums Chart and South Korea's Gaon Album Chart. Billboard also named it one of the best K-pop albums of 2016. The main song, "I Just Wanna Dance," was also very popular. In June 2016, she released another song called "Heartbreak Hotel." Tiffany also held small concerts called Weekend to promote her solo music.
A Public Apology
In August 2016, Tiffany posted some photos on social media during an SMTown concert in Tokyo. These photos included the Japanese flag and the Rising Sun Flag. This caused a lot of criticism in Korea because the timing was close to Korean Liberation Day. This day is very important in Korea's history. Tiffany later apologized in handwritten letters, saying she didn't know enough about history. After this event, she left a TV show called Sister's Slam Dunk. Some people defended Tiffany, while others discussed how female artists in Korea might face harsher criticism than male artists for similar mistakes.
In October 2016, Tiffany was featured on the song "Don't Speak" by Far East Movement. The group praised Tiffany's singing range, saying she was very versatile.
Moving to Los Angeles and New Music
Leaving SM Entertainment and New Beginnings
Tiffany left SM Entertainment in October 2017. She moved back to Los Angeles to study acting and continue her solo music career.
On March 14, 2018, Tiffany released a cover of "Remember Me" from the Pixar movie Coco. She used the stage name Tiffany Young for this release. In June 2018, it was announced that she would be starting her career in the United States with Paradigm Talent Agency. She signed with Transparent Arts as her new record label. Her first U.S. solo song was "Over My Skin."
Tiffany also worked with H&M for their Autumn 2018 campaign. She released her second U.S. song, "Teach You," on September 28, 2018. In October 2018, Tiffany was the first female K-pop artist to walk the red carpet at the American Music Awards. She released a holiday song called "Peppermint" on November 30, 2018.
New Albums and Awards
On January 9, 2019, Tiffany announced her next song, "Born Again." It was released on January 25 as the main song for her next album, Lips on Lips. The music video for "Born Again" was released at the same time. The album's title song was released on February 14. Lips on Lips came out on February 22 and included songs she wrote with artists like Babyface.
Lips on Lips was very successful. It reached number nine on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and number thirty on the Independent Albums chart. It also reached number eight on the Gaon Album Chart in South Korea and was certified Platinum. Tiffany promoted the album with her Lips on Lips Mini Showcase Tour, performing in eight cities across North America in March 2019. She won the Best Solo Breakout award at the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards. This made her the first female Korean artist to win an iHeartRadio Music Award.
Tiffany released a new song called "Magnetic Moon" on August 2, 2019. She also held concerts called Open Hearts Eve in Seoul and Bangkok. After that, she went on the Magnetic Moon Tour from October to November 2019, visiting eighteen cities in North America.
Acting and Recent Activities
On February 16, 2021, Tiffany was chosen to play Roxie Hart in the South Korean musical Chicago. She had to audition with over a thousand other actors to get the role. Tiffany said that being a musical actress was a dream of hers, and Roxie was one of the top three roles she wanted to play.
On June 29, 2021, it was announced that Tiffany would make her acting debut in a TV series called Reborn Rich. In December 2022, Tiffany signed a new contract with Sublime. In February 2023, she held a fan meeting in Thailand called "Forever Wishing."
Supporting the LGBT Community
Tiffany is a strong supporter of the LGBT community. In 2018, she wrote a letter for Gay Pride Month, saying she was inspired by the community. She felt that the yearly pride parade showed how the world could become a better place. During Pride Month in 2021, Tiffany joined a group called Neon Milk in Seoul. They danced to Girls' Generation's 2007 song "Into the New World," which has become a protest song in South Korea. Tiffany later spoke about her support for the community on the TV news show JTBC Newsroom.
Brand Partnerships
In August 2023, the Italian luxury fashion brand Moschino named Tiffany as their House Ambassador. This means she represents the brand.
