A Look at Jesup's Past

How Jesup Began

In February 1869, a man named Willis Clary started building a two-story hotel. This hotel was near where two important railroads met: the Macon and Brunswick Railroad and the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad. Soon after, four stores opened in the area.

Willis Clary was a key person in starting what would become Jesup. He even became the first mayor of the new town. By September 1869, Jesup had five stores, a sawmill, and a special eating place for railroad workers. By December 1869, the community was officially known as Jesup.

The Name of Jesup

Jesup was named after Thomas Jesup. He was a general who served during the Second Seminole War.

Becoming the County Seat

The area where Jesup is located was once part of Appling County, Georgia. On August 27, 1872, some parts of Appling County were added to Wayne County. In 1873, Jesup became the new county seat for Wayne County, taking over from Waynesville.
