Hinesville is a city in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is located on the Atlantic coastal plain, which is a flat area near the ocean. Hinesville is the main city of Liberty County. This means it is where the county government is located.
In 2020, about 34,891 people lived in Hinesville. It is also the most important city in the Hinesville metropolitan area. This area includes all of Liberty County, home to the Fort Stewart army base, and also Long County.

History of Hinesville
When Was Hinesville Founded?
Hinesville was started in 1837. In the same year, it became the main city for Liberty County. Before that, the county's center was in Riceboro.
Becoming a City
Hinesville officially became a city in 1916. The city was named after Charlton Hines, who was a state senator.

Where is Hinesville Located?
Hinesville is in the western part of Liberty County. It sits on the south side of Fort Stewart. Fort Stewart is the biggest U.S. Army base in the eastern United States. The city is next to Flemington on the east. To the south, it borders Allenhurst and Walthourville. The city limits even reach the Long County line to the southwest.
Major Roads and Nearby Cities
U.S. Route 84 goes through Hinesville. If you go east on US 84 for about 15 miles, you'll reach Interstate 95 near Midway. Going southwest for about 14 miles leads to U.S. Route 301 in Ludowici. Hinesville is the second largest city on US 84 in Georgia. Only Valdosta is bigger.
Savannah is about 39 miles northeast of Hinesville. Brunswick is about 55 miles to the south.
Waterways and Land Area
The United States Census Bureau says that Hinesville covers about 47.2 square kilometers (18.2 square miles). Most of this area is land. Only about 0.2 square kilometers (0.07 square miles) is water.
Most of the water in Hinesville flows east into Peacock Creek. This creek then goes into the North Newport River, which is affected by tides. The western part of the city drains north into Mill Creek. Mill Creek is part of the Canoochee River system, which flows east to the tidal Ogeechee River.

Liberty County School District
The Liberty County School District is based in Hinesville. It teaches students from pre-school all the way to 12th grade. The district has seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools.
As of 2010, there were 674 full-time teachers. More than 11,274 students attended schools in the district. The main high schools for the community are Liberty County High School and Bradwell Institute.
