Musical Style and Themes
Jetty Bones' music has been described in many ways, including indie pop, pop rock, alternative pop, folk-pop, emo, and pop punk. Her style and singing have been compared to artists like Paramore and Halsey.
Her sound has changed over time. Her early EPs had a more guitar-focused alternative rock and pop punk sound. They featured bright vocals and catchy melodies. Old Women had a pop rock sound with elements of pop punk and emo. Some compared her vocals on Old Women to Hayley Williams of Paramore.
The – EP showed a shift to a more electronic sound. Songs like "'Better'" used electronic drums, and "Bringing It Up" mixed 1960s pop with punk rock. Kelsie said this EP sounded more like the music she made at home, which she was nervous to share. This positive feedback encouraged her to try new things in her music.
Push Back expanded her sound even more, focusing more on pop. It included elements of alternative country, bluegrass, R&B, hip hop, and synthpop. It also used more electronic sounds and piano. Songs like "Taking Up Space" had a country-leaning indie rock sound, while "That's All" mixed pop, hip hop, and R&B. "Nothing" was an '80s-inspired synthpop dance song. "Dolly," named after country singer Dolly Parton, was an upbeat bluegrass and country pop track.
Kelsie's lyrics often explore personal feelings and challenges. She has said that everything she writes comes from her own experiences. She believes it's important to talk about mental health struggles openly. She wants her music to show that these feelings can exist alongside happy, danceable tunes.
Her early work was influenced by difficult past experiences. Crucial States was written during a time of feeling alone. Old Women explored learning how to connect with people again. The – EP became more self-reflective, continuing themes of openness and seeking connection. Kelsie wanted listeners to know that recovery is possible.
On Push Back, Kelsie decided to write more directly. Songs like "Nothing" and "That's All" deal with relationship challenges. "Taking Up Space" talks about her feelings of worry about her success. The album also touches on overcoming personal struggles. The final song, "Bug Life," was originally written during a very difficult time. Kelsie included it to show people her real journey and that she is still working through things.
