Playing in Europe and Asia

After his success in China, Jia Xiuquan became one of the first Chinese players to join foreign teams. In 1988, he moved to Yugoslavia to play for FK Partizan. He was a pioneer, as only a few other Chinese players had played in Europe before him.

Jia played 10 matches for Partizan in the 1987–88 season. The team finished second in the league that year. He also made history by becoming the first Chinese footballer to play in the UEFA Cup. This happened in a match against AS Roma in October 1988. Partizan won the Yugoslav Cup that season.

After Yugoslavia, Jia moved to the Malaysian club PDRM FA. Later, he played for Gamba Osaka in Japan. He joined them for the first season of the J.League in 1993. Jia was the first Chinese player ever to play in the J.League. He played 25 league games for Gamba Osaka.
