James Farrell Marrs Jr. (December 5, 1943 – August 2, 2017) was an American journalist and author. He was known for writing books and articles about what he believed were secret government plans and conspiracies. Marrs was a well-known person in the group that studies conspiracy theories about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. His 1989 book Crossfire was used as a source for Oliver Stone's 1991 movie JFK.

He also wrote books claiming that there were government secrets about aliens, the 9/11 attacks, telepathy, and secret groups. Jim Marrs started his career as a news reporter in the Dallas–Fort Worth area of Texas. For 30 years, he taught a class about the assassination of John F. Kennedy at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Early Life and Learning

Jim Marrs was born in Fort Worth, Texas. He earned a degree in journalism from the University of North Texas in 1966. He also did more studies at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas from 1967 to 1968.

His Work as a Journalist

Jim Marrs started working as a reporter, cartoonist, and photographer while he was still in college. He worked for several newspapers in Texas, including the Denton Record-Chronicle and the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

In 1968, he joined the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. There, he covered police news and general stories, even traveling to Europe and the Middle East. He also served in the United States Army Reserve for a short time, translating French and German papers. Later, he became the newspaper's writer for military and aerospace topics and an investigative reporter. He left the Star-Telegram in 1980 to become a freelance writer and author.

From 1983 to 1984, Marrs published his own weekly newspaper called the Springtown Current. He also had a cable television show called Texas Roundup from 1982 to 1983.

Jim Marrs appeared on many TV channels like ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and The History Channel. He was also a guest on popular radio shows like Coast to Coast AM.

His Ideas and Books

About the JFK Assassination

In 1989, Jim Marrs's book, Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy, was published. This book became a New York Times best-seller. It was also a main source for the Oliver Stone movie JFK, which came out in 1991.

In Crossfire, Marrs suggested many possible reasons why President Kennedy might have been killed. These included ideas about organized crime, the CIA, and powerful groups like the military–industrial complex. He also mentioned Kennedy's plans to pull out of Vietnam and his ideas about money and civil rights.

A critic of the official report on the JFK assassination, Sylvia Meagher, read Marrs's book before it was published. She said that the book was "nearly perfect" in how it handled the complex evidence. Even with this strong recommendation, many publishers turned down the book before it was finally published in 1989.

Starting in 1976, Marrs taught classes about the Kennedy assassination at the University of Texas at Arlington. In 2000, he added a course on UFOs. He stopped teaching in 2007.

UFOs and Other Topics

From 1992 to 1995, Jim Marrs researched a secret government program called the Stargate Project. This program looked into psychic abilities like remote viewing, which is the idea of seeing things from far away with your mind.

In 1997, Marrs's book about UFOs, Alien Agenda, was published. This book became a top-selling UFO book around the world.

In 2000, his book Rule by Secrecy came out. It explored a hidden history that connected modern secret societies to ancient times. This book also made it onto The New York Times Best Seller list. In 2003, he wrote The War on Freedom, which looked into alleged conspiracies about the September 11 attacks. This book was later re-released as The Terror Conspiracy.

Marrs was a popular speaker at many conferences, including the annual International UFO Congress.

Later Years and Passing

In October 2011, Jim Marrs started his own radio show called The View from Marrs. On his show, he talked about the JFK assassination, UFO research, and other interesting topics.

In 2012, Marrs co-wrote and illustrated a comic book called Oswald's Confession & Other Tales from the War. In 2013, his book Our Occulted History: Do the Global Elite Conceal Ancient Aliens? was published.

Jim Marrs enjoyed hobbies like American Civil War reenactment and collecting items from the Civil War. He also researched the history of World War II. His wife, Carol, said that he was "almost a pacifist" and believed in war only for self-defense.

In March 2017, it was announced that Marrs was ill, causing him to cancel upcoming events. In June 2017, more health problems were shared, including that he was on kidney dialysis. Jim Marrs passed away on August 2, 2017, from a heart attack. He was 73 years old.
