Joachim von Sandrart (born May 12, 1606, died October 14, 1688) was a famous German painter and art historian. He lived during the Baroque period and worked a lot in Amsterdam during a time known as the Dutch Golden Age. He is best known for his important book, the Teutsche Academie. This book is a collection of life stories about many Dutch and German artists. It was published between 1675 and 1680.

Joachim von Sandrart's Early Life and Travels

Joachim von Sandrart was born in Frankfurt am Main, a city in Germany. His family originally came from a place called Mons.

When he was young, he learned to read and write from Johann Theodoor de Brie and Matthäus Merian. These men were famous for their art. At age 15, Joachim was very eager to learn about engraving. Engraving is a way of making pictures by carving designs into a surface. He walked all the way from Frankfurt to Prague to become a student of Aegidius Sadeler.

Sadeler encouraged him to try painting. So, in 1625, Sandrart traveled to Utrecht in the Netherlands. There, he became a student of Gerrit van Honthorst, a well-known painter. Through Honthorst, he met the famous artist Rubens in 1627. Rubens visited Honthorst to ask him to help with a big painting project. Honthorst took Sandrart with him when he went to London. In London, Sandrart helped Honthorst and also made copies of portraits by Holbein. These copies were for a special art collection belonging to Henry Howard, 22nd Earl of Arundel.

All this copying made Sandrart even more curious about art and the world. In 1627, he sailed from London to Venice, Italy. There, he met other artists like Jan Lis and Nicolao Renier. He then went to Bologna, where he met his uncle, Michael le Blond, who was a famous engraver. Together, they traveled to Florence and then to Rome. In Rome, they met Pieter van Laer.

After a few years, Sandrart explored more of Italy. He went to Naples, where he drew pictures of Mount Vesuvius. People at the time believed Vesuvius was near the entrance to the Elysian fields, a mythical place. From Naples, he traveled to Malta and other places. He was always looking for famous places from books to paint. Everywhere he went, he earned money by painting portraits of people. Finally, he returned to Frankfurt and married Johanna de Milkau in 1637.

Because of political problems and a serious illness called the plague, he moved to Amsterdam with his wife in 1637.

Sandrart's Painting Career

In Amsterdam, Joachim von Sandrart became a successful painter. He painted everyday scenes, called genre works, and many portraits. He became very popular.

He received an important job in 1638. He was asked to paint a large picture to celebrate a visit by Maria of Medici. This painting is now in the Rijksmuseum. It shows members of the Amsterdam city guard, called the schutterij, posing around a statue of Maria de Medici. Below it is a poem by Joost van den Vondel. Maria de Medici's visit was a big event for Amsterdam. It was the first time France officially recognized the Dutch Republic as a country. Maria herself was actually running away from Cardinal Richelieu at the time.

This painting made Sandrart very famous as a leading artist. In 1645, he received some money from an inheritance in Stockau, Germany. He decided to sell his belongings in Amsterdam and move back home. He sold two books of his Italian drawings for 3000 guilders. These drawings were later sold again for even more money.

He rebuilt his old family home, but it was later burned down by the French army. He sold it and moved to Augsburg. There, he painted for the family of Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria. When his first wife died in 1672, Sandrart moved to Nuremberg. He married Hester Barbara Bloemaart, whose father was an important official there. It was in Nuremberg that he began writing his famous books.

His large painting from 1649, called Peace-Banquet, celebrates the Peace of Münster. This important painting now hangs in Nuremberg's town hall.

The Teutsche Academie

Joachim von Sandrart is most famous for his books about art. Some of them were written in Latin. His most important work is the Teutsche Academie der edlen Bau-, Bild- und Mahlerey-Künste. This book was published between 1675 and 1680. It is a huge collection of short biographies of artists. It was meant to be like a printed art course.

Sandrart's book was inspired by Karel van Mander's similar book, the Schilder-boeck. Both Sandrart and van Mander used the writings of Giorgio Vasari for the parts about Italian artists. Sandrart's work, in turn, became a main source for Arnold Houbraken's book, Schouburg. Houbraken even wrote a small poem about Sandrart:

What work, trouble, and dedication,
And research that a Writer
Has to do, knows only
The one who has taken it in hand himself.
