College Football Star
Joe Hamilton went to Georgia Tech on a sports scholarship. He played for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team from 1996 to 1999. He set amazing records for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). These records included 10,640 total yards and 65 touchdown passes. He also had 83 total touchdowns.
In 1999, as a senior, he was named a first-team All-American. He won the Davey O'Brien Award, which goes to the best college quarterback. He was also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, finishing second. The winner that year was Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne. In 2002, he was chosen as one of the top fifty players for the ACC 50th Anniversary Football Team. Joe Hamilton was added to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014.
Playing Pro Football
Joe Hamilton was not as tall as most NFL quarterbacks. Because of this, he was picked in the 7th round of the 2000 NFL draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played very little in regular-season games during his three years with the Buccaneers.
In 2002, the Buccaneers sent Hamilton to NFL Europe. He led the Frankfurt Galaxy to a 5–2 record. However, he got a serious knee injury (a torn ACL). He spent the rest of the 2002 NFL season recovering. The Buccaneers then released him. Even though he didn't play much, he received a Super Bowl ring when the Buccaneers won Super Bowl XXXVII.
In 2004, he signed with the Orlando Predators in the Arena Football League. He helped the team to a 9–5 record and made the playoffs. He had another knee injury but still played well. Later in 2004, he briefly joined the Indianapolis Colts. He played in only one game before being released.
He returned to the Orlando Predators and was their main quarterback until the 2006 season. He had a great record of 32 wins and 15 losses as a starter for the Predators. He led them to ArenaBowl XX in 2006. They lost a close game, 69–61, to the Chicago Rush. If they had won, Hamilton would have been the first player to have both a Super Bowl ring and an ArenaBowl ring. After the 2006 season, the Predators released him.
Life After Playing Football
After his playing career, Joe Hamilton went back to school. He earned his degree in History, Technology, and Society in August 2007.
In 2008, Joe Hamilton resigned from a coaching job at Georgia Tech. He later started coaching again in 2010. He became a recruiting intern at Georgia State, which had just started its Georgia State Panthers football team. In June 2011, he became a full-time running backs coach for the Panthers. On May 7, 2013, he was hired again by Georgia Tech. This time, he helped with recruiting for the Yellow Jackets football team.
More recently, Hamilton was a co-host for "The Locker Room," a morning sports radio show in Atlanta. He also worked as a color analyst for Georgia Tech football radio broadcasts. On September 9, 2024, it was announced that Hamilton was no longer working for Dickey Broadcasting. This meant he would no longer be heard on 680 The Fan radio station.
