Early life and Education
Joel Daly was born on August 21, 1934, in Great Falls, Montana. He grew up in Washington state. He went to Yale University and graduated in 1956 with magna cum laude honors. This means he graduated with great distinction.
Career in News
Four years after college, Joel Daly started his career in news. In 1960, he joined WJW-TV in Cleveland. He worked as a co-anchor with Doug Adair. They were the first co-anchor news team in the United States. This means they were the first two people to host a news show together.
Working at WLS–TV Chicago (1967–2005)
In 1967, Joel Daly moved to Chicago and started working at WBKB-TV. This station later changed its name to WLS-TV in 1968. At first, Daly hosted a solo newscast called Newsnight.
Soon after, he was paired with Fahey Flynn. They became a very popular evening news team in Chicago. They even won a local Emmy Award after just one year. An Emmy Award is a special prize given for excellence in television.
Daly and Flynn were known for their unique way of presenting the news. Critics called it "happy talk". Most news presenters at that time were very serious. But Daly and Flynn would chat and joke a little as they moved from one news story to another. Daly said they wanted to be "regular people talking to regular people." This style became very popular, and other news anchors across the country started to copy them.
After Fahey Flynn passed away in 1983, Daly briefly co-anchored the 10:00 news. Then, he joined Oprah Winfrey to co-anchor the 4:00 PM news broadcast at WLS-TV. A few weeks later, Linda Yu replaced Oprah Winfrey. Joel Daly stayed on the 4:00 PM news until May 2005, when he decided to retire.
After retiring, he sometimes appeared on newscasts to report on legal topics. He also hosted parades for the channel. Joel Daly was honored for his work many times. He was inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2008, he received the first Illinois Broadcast Pioneer Award. He won five Emmy Awards during his career.
Other Interests and Work
Joel Daly had many interests outside of news. In 1988, he earned a law degree, called a Juris Doctor, from Chicago-Kent College of Law. He took evening classes for four years to get this degree. In 2005, he became a director at the John Marshall Law School and also taught some classes there.
In 2007, Daly became a spokesperson for the U.S. District Court in Chicago.
