Joey Bishop (born Joseph Abraham Gottlieb; February 3, 1918 – October 17, 2007) was a famous American entertainer. He was a comedian, actor, and talk show host. Joey Bishop was also a key member of the "Rat Pack" group. This group included stars like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford. He started on TV in 1948 and later had his own comedy and talk shows.

Early Life and Start in Comedy

Joey Bishop was born in the Bronx, New York City. He was the youngest of five children. His parents, Anna and Jacob Gottlieb, were immigrants from Poland. His father fixed bicycles. Joey grew up in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

During World War II, Joey Bishop joined the U.S. Army. He became a sergeant in the Special Services. This group provided entertainment for soldiers.

A Star on Television

Joey Bishop began his career doing stand-up comedy. He often performed with his older brother, Maury. He appeared on many popular TV shows. These included The Ed Sullivan Show and The Dinah Shore Chevy Show.

Joey Bishop was a frequent guest host for The Tonight Show. He filled in for Jack Paar and later for Johnny Carson. He hosted Carson's show at least 175 times in the 1960s. He was the most frequent guest host for a long time.

The Joey Bishop Show Sitcom

Joey Bishop starred in his own situation comedy called The Joey Bishop Show. It started on September 20, 1961. The show ran for four seasons and had 123 episodes. It aired first on NBC and then on CBS.

In the show, Joey played a character named Joey Barnes. At first, Joey Barnes was a publicity agent. Later, he became a talk show host. Abby Dalton joined the cast in 1962 as his wife.

Hosting a Late-Night Talk Show

Later, Joey Bishop hosted a 90-minute late-night talk show. It was also called The Joey Bishop Show. This show started on ABC on April 17, 1967. It was meant to compete with Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. The show ran until December 26, 1969. His sidekick on the show was a new talent named Regis Philbin.

Movies and the Rat Pack

Joey Bishop was one of the stars of the movie Ocean's 11 (1960). This film was about military veterans who plan to rob five Las Vegas casinos. He acted alongside Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Peter Lawford. These five actors were famously known as the Rat Pack.

While filming Ocean's 11, the Rat Pack also performed together in Las Vegas. They performed onstage at the Sands Hotel. Joey Bishop mostly told jokes and wrote much of their act. He also appeared with the Rat Pack in the movie Sergeants 3 (1962). He also acted with Dean Martin in the Western comedy Texas Across the River (1966). In that movie, he played an American Indian character.

Joey Bishop was the only Rat Pack member to work with actors from a younger group. This group was called the Brat Pack. He appeared as a ghost in the film Betsy's Wedding (1990). This movie starred Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. His last movie role was in Mad Dog Time (1996). This film was directed by his son, Larry Bishop. Joey's character in the movie was named Gottlieb, which was his real last name.

Personal Life and Later Years

Joey Bishop married Sylvia Ruzga in 1941. They were married for 58 years. Sylvia passed away in 1999 from lung cancer. They had one son, Larry Bishop, who became a film director and actor.

After Sylvia's death, Joey Bishop had a longtime companion named Nora Garibotti. Joey Bishop passed away on October 17, 2007, at age 89. He died from multiple organ failure at his home in Newport Beach, California. He was the last surviving member of the Rat Pack.

Following his wishes, Joey Bishop was cremated. His ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean near his home. He had two grandsons, Kirk and Scott. In 2009, the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia honored Joey Bishop. They added him to their Hall of Fame after his death.
