Early Life and Challenges
Joey Fatts was born on August 3, 1991, in Long Beach, California. His parents moved there from Compton, hoping for a better life for him and his older brother. When Joey was young, his family faced difficulties. His father was not around, and his mother struggled to care for him and his sister.
When he was fifteen, Joey moved to Los Angeles to play football. He did not have a permanent home and often slept in his car or at friends' houses. He dreamed of playing football in college. However, he faced many tough times. Several of his close friends passed away due to violence. These events made him very sad and changed his path. By the time he was in twelfth grade, he stopped playing football.
Music Career Beginnings
Starting in Music (2011–2014)
After deciding not to pursue football, Joey's cousin, Vince Staples, suggested he try rapping. Joey quickly found he was good at it. At first, he could not find anyone to make beats for his songs. So, he learned to produce his own music.
A few months later, someone shared Joey's beats with ASAP Yams, a founder of ASAP Mob. Joey then received a call from ASAP Rocky, who wanted to work with him. This was a big step for his career.
Joey Fatts produced the song "Jodye" on ASAP Rocky's first album, Long. Live. ASAP. Later, the rapper Waka Flocka Flame signed Joey to his management company, 36 Brick House. Joey released his first mixtape, Chipper Jones, on August 15, 2012. His fan base grew quickly. After that, he joined ASAP Rocky on tour.
After his tour, he released the second part of Chipper Jones on May 29, 2013. This helped him gain even more fans. In September 2013, Joey Fatts went on the "Turnt x Burnt" tour with ASAP Ferg, Aston Matthews, Overdoz, and 100s. In January 2014, he announced his mixtape Ill Street Blues.
Later Releases and Tours (2014–Present)
Joey Fatts released the third part of his Chipper Jones series on August 3, 2014. Two songs from this mixtape, "Chipper Jones" and "Keep It G Pt. II" (featuring ASAP Rocky), became popular on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart.
After more than a year, Joey released his self-produced Ill Street Blues mixtape on February 17, 2015. In March 2014, rapper Currensy mentioned he thought about signing Joey Fatts to his label, Jet Life Recordings. In January 2016, Joey performed at the Yams Day concert in New York City. On March 3, 2016, Fatts released the mixtape I'll Call You Tomorrow. This mixtape featured other artists like Lil Yachty, Vince Staples, Playboi Carti, and Ryan Bogan.
