Early Life and Dreams
Joey Lee Vercher was born on August 3, 1991, in Long Beach, California. His parents moved to Long Beach from Compton. They wanted a better life for Joey and his older brother.
When Joey was young, his father went to prison. This left his mother to raise him and his sister. Later, Joey and his mother moved to San Fernando Valley for a while. At age fifteen, he moved to Los Angeles. He wanted to play football there, even though he had no place to live. He often slept in his friends' garages or his car. He worked hard to chase his dream of playing football in college.
During his teenage years, Joey faced many challenges. Sadly, some of his close friends passed away due to violence. This made him feel very sad for a long time. By the time he was in twelfth grade, he stopped playing football completely.
Music Career Beginnings
Starting in Music (2011–2014)
After deciding not to play football anymore, Joey's cousin, Vince Staples, suggested he try rapping. Joey quickly found out he was good at it. However, he could not find anyone to make beats for his songs. So, he decided to learn how to make them himself.
In December 2011, Joey decided to stop rapping for a bit. He tried to sell an iMac computer he had. His cousin Vince Staples helped by sharing his tweet. This led him to meet A$ton Matthews. Joey and A$ton met at a Burger King and instantly connected over their shared love for music.
In January 2012, they became very close friends. Joey soon moved into A$ton's garage. A few months later, someone shared Joey's music beats with ASAP Yams. Yams was a founder of ASAP Mob. Joey then got a call from ASAP Rocky, who wanted to work with him.
Joey Fatts produced a song called "Jodye" for ASAP Rocky's first album, Long. Live. ASAP. Later, the rapper Waka Flocka Flame signed Joey to his management company. Joey released his first mixtape, Chipper Jones, on August 15, 2012. His number of followers on Twitter grew very quickly. After this, he joined ASAP Rocky on tour.
When he finished the tour, he released Chipper Jones Vol. 2 on May 29, 2013. This helped him gain even more fans. In September 2013, Joey Fatts went on the "Turnt x Burnt" tour. He toured with other artists like ASAP Ferg and Aston Matthews. In January 2014, Joey Fatts showed the cover and release date for his mixtape, Ill Street Blues.
Later Releases (2014–Present)
Joey Fatts released the third part of his Chipper Jones series on August 3, 2014. The main song and "Keep It G Pt. II" (featuring ASAP Rocky) became popular. They reached high spots on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart.
More than a year later, Joey Fatts released his self-produced Ill Street Blues mixtape on February 17, 2015. In March 2014, rapper Currensy mentioned that he thought about signing Joey Fatts to his music label. In January 2016, Joey performed at the Yams Day concert in New York City. On March 3, 2016, Fatts released his mixtape, I'll Call You Tomorrow. This mixtape featured other artists like Lil Yachty and Vince Staples.
