Johanna Basford is a famous Scottish illustrator. She was born in 1983. Her drawings are all done by hand, mostly in black and white. She uses pencils and pens to create her detailed art. She is known for helping to start the big trend of adult colouring books.

About Johanna Basford

Johanna Basford was born in Scotland in 1983. She grew up on her parents' fish farm in a place called Auchnagatt. This area is in Aberdeenshire. She studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) in Dundee. She graduated in 2005 with a degree in textile Design. She specialized in screen printing.

Johanna lives and works in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She has a small art studio in a old farmhouse. It has big windows that look out over the fields. Johanna believes that computer-made pictures can feel "cold and soulless." This is why she uses traditional art tools.

Her Amazing Success

In 2013, Johanna published her first adult colouring book. It was called Secret Garden. Since then, she has sold over 21 million books around the world. This makes her a leader in the adult colouring book boom.

In 2016, Johanna was given a special award. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This award was for her great work in art and business.

In 2019, she broke a Guinness World Record! She made the Largest Drawing by an Individual. It was a huge floral drawing. It covered more than 501 square meters (5,395 square feet). She created it in just 12 hours at her old school, Ellon Academy.

In 2021, it was announced that she would give a special talk. This was for the University of Dundee. She also received the university's Entrepreneurial Recognition Award.

Johanna's Art Projects

Johanna Basford has worked with many big companies. Her clients include Sony, Nike, Tate Modern, and Starbucks. In 2008, a company called Queensberry-Hunt asked her to design patterns. These were for their tableware collection.

In 2010, she created pictures for an iPhone app. It was called The New Goodbye. Johanna also illustrated the cover for the 2010 Edinburgh Festival Fringe program. She worked with a design agency to create a series of drawings. These were for the program and a special social media campaign.

Unique Wallpaper Designs

Besides her drawings, Johanna has designed special glowing wallpapers. These wallpapers are printed using special inks. The inks can be seen under ultraviolet light.

In May 2013, Johanna had her first solo art show. It was at Dundee Contemporary Arts. The show was called Wonderlands. It was one of their most popular exhibitions ever. Over 8,400 people came to see it.

In November 2017, she created a Scottish-themed Google Doodle. This was for the search engine's homepage. It celebrated St Andrew's Day.
