From Worker to Soldier

John B. Dennis was born in 1835. Before the war, he worked with metals. When the American Civil War began, he joined the Union Army. He started as a private in the 6th Massachusetts Militia. Later, he became a captain in the 7th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.

Brave Service and Challenges

John Dennis fought in many battles. He was badly hurt during the Battle of Pocotaligo in South Carolina. Later, on June 2, 1864, he was captured by enemy forces at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia. After his release, he continued to serve. He was promoted to major and then to the special ranks of "brevet lieutenant colonel" and "brevet colonel" in 1865. These "brevet" ranks were honorary titles given for good service, not a full promotion. He left the volunteer army on July 31, 1865.

Becoming a Brevet General

On December 8, 1868, President Andrew Johnson nominated Dennis for another special honor. He was chosen to be a "brevet brigadier general" of volunteers. This meant he received the honorary rank of a general. The United States Senate confirmed this appointment on February 16, 1869.

Life After the War

After the Civil War ended, John B. Dennis became a lawyer. He also worked as an official for the Internal Revenue Service, which collects taxes.

John B. Dennis passed away in Melrose, Massachusetts, on December 26, 1894. He was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska.
