John Francis Harcourt Baring, 7th Baron Ashburton (born November 2, 1928 – died October 6, 2020) was a very important British banker. He was known as Lord Ashburton. He led a big oil company called BP from 1992 to 1995. He also worked for other large companies like Jaguar Cars and Dunlop Rubber.

About His Family

John Baring was the oldest son of Alexander Baring, 6th Baron Ashburton. His mother was Doris Harcourt.

His grandmother, Mary Ethel Burns, was related to a famous American banker named J. P. Morgan. This means his family had strong connections in both British and American banking.

Marriages and Children

First Marriage

On November 25, 1955, John Baring married Susan Mary Renwick. She was the daughter of Robert Renwick, who was also a Baron.

John and Susan had four children together:

  • Lucinda Mary Louise "Lucy" Baring (born 1956). She married Michael John Wilmot Malet Vaughan. They have three children: Emma, Sophie, and Edward.
  • Mark Francis Robert Baring, 8th Baron Ashburton (born 1958). He married Miranda Caroline Wright. They have four children: Aurea, Frederick, Patrick, and Flora. Mark became the next Baron Ashburton.
  • Rose Theresa Baring (born 1961). She married Barnaby Rogerson. They have two daughters: Molly and Hannah.
  • Alexander Nicholas John "Zam" Baring (born 1964). He married Lucy Caroline Fraser. They have four children: Olive, William, Anna, and Alfred.

Second Marriage

In 1987, John Baring married Sarah Cornelia Spencer-Churchill. Her grandfather was Jack Spencer-Churchill, who was the brother of Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill was a very famous Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during World War II.

Sarah had three children from a previous marriage: Peregrine Crewe, Emma Crewe, and Bel Crewe. John Baring did not have any more children with Sarah.

His Career

John Baring went to two famous schools: Eton College and Trinity College, Oxford.
