John Christopher Reilly (born May 24, 1965) is an American actor. He is famous for playing many different kinds of characters. He takes on both main and supporting roles in serious movies and funny comedies. You might know his voice as Wreck-It Ralph from the popular animated films.

Reilly became well-known for his roles in comedies like Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) and Step Brothers (2008). He also played the main character in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007). On TV, he starred as Dr. Steve Brule in Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! and its spin-off Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule.

He has also been in many dramatic films. These include Hard Eight (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), and Magnolia (1999). He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the musical movie Chicago (2002). Reilly also played Oliver Hardy in the film Stan and Ollie (2018).

Early Life and School

John C. Reilly was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 24, 1965. He was the fifth of six children in his family. His father worked for a company that supplied industrial linens. John's dad had Irish and Scottish family roots. His mother had Lithuanian ancestry.

Reilly has said he was a bit mischievous when he was a kid. He once shared a story about stealing 500 boxes of Sugar Corn Pops with friends when he was 12. He grew up in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. John went to Brother Rice High School. He later studied acting at The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago.

Early Film Roles (1988–1995)

Reilly started his film career in 1989 in the war movie Casualties of War. His part was originally small, but the director liked his acting so much that they made it bigger. He then appeared in Days of Thunder (1990) with Tom Cruise.

He also played a criminal in The River Wild (1994) alongside Kevin Bacon. In this movie, they terrorized a family on a rafting trip. Reilly continued to take on supporting roles in various films during these early years.

In 2006, Reilly co-starred with Will Ferrell in the comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. He played Cal Naughton Jr., the best friend and teammate of the main character. The movie was a big success.

From 2007 to 2010, Reilly often appeared on the comedy show Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! as Dr. Steve Brule. This led to his own spin-off show, Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule, which he also wrote and produced.

In 2007, he starred as the main character in the parody movie Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. He sang many songs in the film, making fun of famous musicians. He received two Golden Globe nominations for this role. The next year, he reunited with Will Ferrell in Step Brothers. They played middle-aged stepbrothers forced to live together.

The film was very popular and made over $471 million. He returned to voice Ralph in the sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet, in 2018.

In 2014, Reilly narrated the nature documentary Bears. He also played Rhomann Dey in the Marvel Studios movie Guardians of the Galaxy. In 2015, he appeared in five films, including the comedy-drama The Lobster. In this movie, he played a man with a lisp who has to find a romantic partner.

Reilly voiced a sheep in the animated musical comedy Sing (2016). In 2017, he appeared in the monster film Kong: Skull Island. He played Hank Marlow, a World War II lieutenant stuck on the island for 28 years. Critics praised his performance in the movie.

In 2018, Reilly co-starred with Steve Coogan in Stan & Ollie. This movie was about the famous comedy duo Laurel and Hardy. Reilly played Oliver Hardy. He also played a hitman in The Sisters Brothers (2018). Reilly helped produce this film, which was based on a Western novel.

John C. Reilly married Alison Dickey in 1992. Alison is an independent film producer. They first met while working on the movie Casualties of War in Thailand. They have two sons together. Their older son, Leo, is a musician who performs under the name LoveLeo.

Reilly practices a type of meditation called transcendental meditation.
