John Creed (born 1819 – died November 28, 1872) was a brave soldier from Ireland. He fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War. He earned the highest military award, the Medal of Honor, for his amazing courage. This happened during the Battle of Fisher's Hill in Virginia.

Joining the Union Army

In August 1862, John Creed decided to join the fight. He became part of the 23rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This unit was part of the Union Army, which fought to keep the United States together. John served as a Corporal, a leader of a small group of soldiers. He served for almost three years, leaving the army in June 1865.

The Medal of Honor

John Creed received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fisher's Hill. This battle took place near Strasburg, Virginia, between September 21 and 24, 1864. It was part of a larger series of fights called the Valley Campaigns of 1864. The Medal of Honor is given to soldiers who show extreme bravery.
