John Ford House (born January 9, 1827 – died June 28, 1904) was an American politician. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Tennessee's 6th congressional district. He also served in the Tennessee state legislature.
Early Life and Education
John Ford House was born on January 9, 1827. His birthplace was near Franklin, Tennessee, in Williamson County. He went to a local school called an academy. Later, he attended Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky.
In 1850, he finished his studies at Lebanon Law School. After that, he became a lawyer. He started his law practice in Franklin, Tennessee.
Political Journey
House later moved to Montgomery County, Tennessee. In 1853, he became a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives. This is part of the state's government.
In 1860, he was a presidential elector. This means he was chosen to cast a vote for president. He supported John Bell and Edward Everett. They were part of the Constitutional Union Party.
During the American Civil War, he joined the Confederate States Army. He served until June 1865. After the war, he attended the Democratic National Convention in 1868. This was a big meeting for the Democratic Party. In 1870, he helped write the Tennessee state constitution.
Serving in Congress
John Ford House was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served for four terms, from March 4, 1875, to March 3, 1883.
After his time in Congress, he did not run for re-election in 1882. He then went back to working as a lawyer.
His Final Years
John Ford House passed away in Clarksville, Tennessee, on June 28, 1904. He was 77 years old. He was laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery.
