John Fulton Reid was a talented New Zealand cricketer. He was born in Auckland on March 3, 1956. John sadly passed away on December 28, 2020, in Christchurch.

Playing Cricket for New Zealand

John Reid went to Lynfield College, a school well known for its cricket. A "house" at the college is even named after him! While playing cricket, he also worked as a high school geography teacher.

He played in 19 Test matches and 25 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for New Zealand. His international career lasted from 1979 to 1986. In Test matches, he had a strong batting average of 46.28. This included scoring six centuries (100 runs or more) in Test cricket.

Memorable Cricket Moments

One of John Reid's greatest games for New Zealand was against Sri Lanka in 1984. He batted for 11 hours in very hot weather in Colombo. He scored an amazing 180 runs from 445 balls. This long and patient effort helped New Zealand win the match.

John Reid also played a key role in New Zealand's first-ever Test win over Australia in Australia in 1985. He scored 108 runs in that game. He and Martin Crowe made a huge partnership of 284 runs together. Richard Hadlee, another famous cricketer, said that John's contribution was very important. Their partnership put New Zealand in a strong position to win that historic match.

John Reid's cousin, Bruce Reid, was also a cricketer who played for Australia.

What Others Said About John

John Wright, a teammate, described John Reid as a "good team man." He said John was "quiet, dependable, reliable, and smart."
