John Jackson (born 31 May 1778 – died 1 June 1831) was a talented British artist. He was especially known for painting amazing portraits of people. He became a member of the Royal Academy, which is a big honor for an artist.

Early Life and Artistic Dreams

John Jackson was born in Lastingham, Yorkshire, on 31 May 1778. His father, also named John Jackson, was a tailor. Young John started learning to be a tailor, but he really wanted to be an artist. His father wasn't happy about his son's artistic dreams.

Luckily, John had some important people who believed in him. Henry Phipps, 1st Earl of Mulgrave and Sir George Beaumont, 7th Baronet helped him a lot. Sir George Beaumont even let John live in his home and gave him money to help him study art.

Thanks to this help, John could go to the Royal Academy Schools. There, he met other future famous artists like David Wilkie. He also got to study many paintings at Castle Howard, which was the home of the Earl of Carlisle. People said his watercolor paintings were really good!

Becoming a Famous Portrait Painter

By 1807, John Jackson was becoming well-known for his portraits. He started painting more with oils, which is a common way for artists to create detailed pictures. He often sent his paintings to Somerset House for people to see.

John also loved to travel and learn. In 1816, he visited the Netherlands and Flanders. Later, in 1819, he went on a big trip with another artist, Sir Francis Chantrey. They traveled to Switzerland, Rome, Florence, and Venice. While in Rome, John was chosen to join the Academy of St Luke, which was a very important art academy. His portrait of the famous sculptor Antonio Canova, which he painted during this trip, was thought to be outstanding.

His Amazing Portraits

John Jackson painted many, many portraits. You can see the influence of other great painters like Sir Thomas Lawrence and Henry Raeburn in his work. He painted some very important people of his time.

Some of the famous faces he captured included the Duke of Wellington, who was a famous military leader. He also painted the explorer Sir John Franklin. John Jackson's portrait of Lady Dover, painted in 1823, was highly praised by many.

Royal Academy Achievements

John Jackson worked hard and achieved a lot in the art world. He became a student at the Royal Academy on 9 March 1805. This academy is one of the most important art institutions in Britain.

He was then elected an Associate of the Royal Academy on 6 November 1815. This was a step towards becoming a full member. Finally, on 10 February 1817, he was elected a full member of the Royal Academy. This showed how much his talent and hard work were recognized.

Family Life

John Jackson was married twice. His first marriage was in 1808 to Maria Frances Fletcher. They had three children together: Maria Rosa, Charles Fletcher, and John Edmund. Sadly, his two sons died when they were very young. His first wife, Maria, also passed away in March 1817.

In August 1818, John married again to Matilda Louisa Ward. Matilda was the daughter of another painter, James Ward. John and Matilda had three confirmed children: Howard William Mansfield, Mulgrave Phipps, and Matilda Louisa. Mulgrave Phipps Jackson also became a painter and showed his work at the Royal Academy.

John Jackson passed away in 1831 in St John's Wood, London.
