John Charles Montagu Douglas Scott (born March 30, 1864 – died October 19, 1935) was a very important person in British history. He held the titles of the 7th Duke of Buccleuch and the 9th Duke of Queensberry. He was also a Member of Parliament (MP) and a peer, which means he was a member of the nobility. Before he became Duke, he was known by other titles like the Earl of Dalkeith.

Early Life and Royal Connections
John Charles Montagu Douglas Scott was born in 1864. His parents were William Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch and Lady Louisa Hamilton. He was one of eight children in his family.
When he was young, his older brother, Walter Henry, sadly died in a hunting accident. Because Walter had no children, John inherited the title of Earl of Dalkeith. This meant he was next in line to become Duke.
John also had a special connection to the royal family. In 1881, he served in the Royal Navy as a Midshipman on a ship called HMS Bacchante. On this ship, he sailed with Queen Victoria's grandsons, Prince Albert Victor and Prince George. Prince George later became King George V. John was promoted to Lieutenant in 1883.
His Career and Public Service
The Duke of Buccleuch held many important jobs throughout his life. These roles showed his dedication to public service:
- Member of Parliament (MP): From 1895 to 1906, he was an MP for Roxburghshire. An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the British Parliament.
- Deputy Lieutenant (DL): He served as a Deputy Lieutenant for several areas, including Edinburgh, Dumfriesshire, and Roxburghshire. This role helps the Lord-Lieutenant, who represents the King or Queen in a county.
- Justice of the Peace (JP): He was a Justice of the Peace for Selkirk and Roxburghshire. A JP is a volunteer who deals with minor legal cases in local courts.
- Vice Lord Lieutenant of Selkirk: In 1893, he became the Vice Lord Lieutenant of Selkirk.
- Lord-Lieutenant of Dumfriesshire: From 1915 to 1935, he was the Lord-Lieutenant of Dumfriesshire. This is a very important role, representing the monarch in a county.
- Lord Clerk Register for Scotland: From 1926 to 1935, he held the ancient and honorable position of Lord Clerk Register for Scotland.
Marriage and Family Life
On January 30, 1893, John married Lady Margaret Alice Bridgeman. She was often called "Molly." They had a large family with eight children:

- Walter John Montagu Douglas Scott (1894–1973), who later became the 8th Duke of Buccleuch.

- Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott (1901–2004). She had a very special marriage. She married Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, who was the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. This made her a princess!

His Passing
The Duke of Buccleuch passed away on October 19, 1935, at the age of 71. He died at his home, Bowhill House, in Scotland. His death happened less than a month before his daughter, Princess Alice, was supposed to marry Prince Henry.
Because of his passing, the wedding plans had to change. The ceremony was moved from the large Westminster Abbey to a more private setting at Buckingham Palace.
He was buried on October 22, 1935, in the family crypt at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Dalkeith, Scotland. His son, Walter, then became the 8th Duke of Buccleuch.
Titles and Special Awards
The Duke of Buccleuch received many important titles and awards throughout his life:
- Earl of Dalkeith: He held this title from 1886 until 1914.
- 7th Duke of Buccleuch & 9th Duke of Queensberry: He became Duke in 1914.
- Captain General of the Royal Company of Archers: This was a special ceremonial role he held from 1929.
- Knight of the Thistle (KT): He received this high honor in 1917. The Order of the Thistle is one of the oldest and highest orders of chivalry in Scotland.
- Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO): He was given this award in 1934. This order recognizes personal service to the monarch.
- Honorary Colonel: He was an Honorary Colonel for the 78th (Lowland) Field Brigade, Royal Artillery, starting in 1929.
