Fighting in the Civil War

Tweedale joined the Union Army in 1862. He was part of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry regiment. This was during the American Civil War, a conflict that divided the United States.

He showed great courage during the Battle of Stones River. This battle took place in Tennessee. For his brave actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. This medal is given to military members who show extreme bravery.

After the War

After the Civil War ended in 1865, John Tweedale continued his education. He earned a law degree from Columbian University in 1868. This university is now known as George Washington University.

He then began working for the government. He became the Chief Clerk of the War Department. This department managed the military. Later, he was promoted to Assistant Adjutant General. This role meant he helped manage the army's records and administration.

Tweedale retired from his service on June 10, 1905, with the rank of colonel. He passed away in 1920. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. This cemetery is a special place where many American heroes are laid to rest.
