John West, 2nd Earl De La Warr (born May 9, 1729 – died November 22, 1777) was an important person in British history. He was an officer in the British Army, a nobleman (meaning he had a special title), and worked for the royal family.
John West's Early Life
John West was born on May 9, 1729. His father was John West, 1st Earl De La Warr, who was also a nobleman. His mother was Lady Charlotte McCarthy. John had a younger brother and two sisters. His father later married again after his mother passed away.
Military and Royal Career
John West started his military career in 1746 as an ensign in the army. An ensign was a junior officer who carried the regiment's flag. He slowly moved up the ranks, becoming a lieutenant colonel in 1755 and a colonel in 1758.
From 1760 to 1761, he worked as an aide-de-camp for King George III. This meant he was a personal assistant to the King. In 1761, he was promoted to major general.
That same year, his father was given the new title of Earl De La Warr. This allowed John to use the title Viscount Cantelupe. From 1761 to 1766, he served as the Vice-Chamberlain to Queen Charlotte. He was also a Captain and Colonel of the 1st Troop Horse Grenadier Guards during this time.
When his father died in 1766, John inherited his father's titles and became the 2nd Earl De La Warr. He then became the Master of the Horse to Queen Charlotte. This was an important role in charge of the Queen's horses and stables. He also became Captain and Colonel of His Majesty's Own Troop of Horse Guards. He held both these jobs until he passed away in 1777. In 1768, he took on another important role as the Lord Chamberlain to Queen Charlotte. In 1770, he was promoted again in the army to lieutenant general.
Family Life
On August 8, 1756, John West married Mary Wynyard. Together, they had five children: two daughters and three sons.
- William Augustus West (1757–1783) became the 3rd Earl De La Warr after his father.
- John Richard West (1758–1795) later became the 4th Earl De La Warr.
- Frederick West (1767–1852) married twice and had children.
- Lady Georgiana West (died 1832) married Edward Pery Buckley.
- Lady Matilda West (died 1843) married General Henry Wynyard.
Lord De La Warr passed away in London on November 22, 1777. He was buried in St. Margaret's, Westminster. His eldest son, William, inherited his titles.
