Occupation

John William Noell (born February 22, 1816 – died March 14, 1863) was an important politician from Missouri. He served as a U.S. Representative, which means he was part of the United States Congress. He was also the father of another politician, Thomas Estes Noell.

Early Life and Career

John William Noell was born in Bedford County, Virginia. He went to school in the countryside there. When he was seventeen, he moved to Perryville, Missouri.

Starting a Business

In Perryville, John Noell worked in milling, which means he operated a mill to grind grain. He also ran a store. These jobs helped him learn about business.

Becoming a Lawyer

Even while working, John Noell studied law. He worked hard to learn about legal rules and how courts work. In 1843, he passed his exams and became a lawyer. He then started his own law practice in Perryville.

Public Service in Missouri

Before going to Congress, John Noell held several important jobs in Missouri. From 1841 to 1850, he was the clerk of the circuit court for Perry County. This job involved managing court records and helping with legal procedures.

Later, he was elected to the state senate in Missouri. He served as a state senator from 1851 to 1855. In this role, he helped make laws for the state of Missouri.

Serving in Congress

John William Noell was elected to the United States House of Representatives several times. This is where laws are made for the entire country.

Political Parties

When he was first elected in 1858, John Noell was a member of the Democratic Party. He was re-elected in 1860 as a Democrat. Later, in 1862, he was re-elected as an Unconditional Unionist. This change in party showed his strong support for keeping the United States together during the time of the American Civil War.

Time in Office

John Noell served in Congress from March 4, 1859, until he passed away on March 14, 1863. He died in Washington, D.C., while still serving his country. He was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Perryville, Missouri.
