Discovering Johnstown's Past
How Johnstown Began
Johnstown started on a large piece of land, about 4,000 acres, which is like 16 square kilometers. This land was given to John Brown, a soldier from the American Revolution, by President John Adams in 1800. It was a reward for his military service.
In 1810, John Brown sold this huge property for $10,000. That was about $2.50 for each acre. Dr. Oliver Bigelow bought the land. He then planned out the village of Johnstown. Dr. Bigelow also made sure to set aside land for streets, alleys, and a town square for everyone to use.
The Mastodon Discovery
One of the most exciting events in Johnstown's history happened in 1926. A farmer named James Bailey found a nearly complete skeleton of a mastodon. Mastodons were huge, elephant-like animals that lived a long time ago. This amazing find was later sold to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
