Jonathan Goodwin's Football Journey

Growing Up and High School

Jonathan Goodwin was born in Columbia, South Carolina. He went to Lower Richland High School in Hopkins, South Carolina. While there, he was a student and played football, earning a special award for his skills on the team. He was chosen as an all-conference player for his great performance.

College Football Days

After high school, Jonathan went to the University of Michigan. He played for the Michigan Wolverines football team from 1998 to 2001. He had transferred to Michigan after his first year of college.

Playing in the NFL

Starting with the New York Jets

Jonathan was picked by the New York Jets in the fifth round of the 2002 NFL draft. This meant he was the 154th player chosen overall in that year's draft.

Winning with the New Orleans Saints

After playing for the Jets until 2005, Jonathan became a "free agent." This means he was able to sign with any team he wanted. He chose to join the New Orleans Saints. He became the Saints' main center during their amazing 2009 season, when they won the Super Bowl XLIV. In 2010, he was also chosen to play in the Pro Bowl, which is a special game featuring the best players from the NFL.

Time with the San Francisco 49ers

On August 3, 2011, Jonathan signed with the San Francisco 49ers. He started every one of their 16 games that season. He even played against his old team, the Saints, in a playoff game, which the 49ers won. However, the 49ers later lost in another playoff game, the 2011 NFC Championship.

Jonathan received the Bobb McKittrick Award. This award is given each year to the 49ers' offensive lineman who shows the most courage, effort, and dedication. The offensive linemen themselves vote for who gets this award.

At the end of the 2012 season, Jonathan and the 49ers played in Super Bowl XLVII, the NFL championship game. He started the game, but his team lost to the Baltimore Ravens with a score of 34–31. Jonathan started every game as center during his three years with the 49ers.

Back to the Saints

On June 3, 2014, Jonathan went back to play for the New Orleans Saints, signing a one-year contract. He was chosen to be the starting center again. In a game against the Minnesota Vikings, he had to leave the game in the third quarter because of an ankle injury.

Life Outside Football

Jonathan's older brother, Harold, is also involved in football. He works as the run game coordinator and assistant head coach for the Carolina Panthers.
