Jonathas Cristian de Jesus, often called Jonathas, is a Brazilian professional football player. He was born on March 6, 1989. He plays as a striker, which means he's a forward player who scores goals. Currently, he plays for Athletic.

Jonathas has played football in many countries. These include Brazil, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Russia, Germany, and India. In Spain's top league, La Liga, he played 61 games. He scored 21 goals for teams like Elche and Real Sociedad.

Playing for Football Clubs

Early Career in Brazil and Europe

Jonathas de Jesus started his football journey in Brazil. He played for Cruzeiro's youth teams. He also played a few times for their main team. During this time, he was loaned to other Brazilian clubs, Ipatinga and Villa Nova.

In October 2008, Jonathas moved to Europe. He joined AZ Alkmaar, a Dutch team that had won their league. Cruzeiro announced that AZ bought most of his player rights for about €600,000. Cruzeiro kept some of the rights.

Jonathas played his first game for AZ on October 28, 2009. It was a cup match against Spakenburg, and he scored a goal in their 5–2 win. On November 21, he played his first league game. He scored in a 4–2 win against Roda JC. However, he was sent off (had to leave the game) for hitting an opponent.

On February 1, 2011, Jonathas moved to Italy. He joined Brescia Calcio on a contract for about one and a half years. The transfer fee was around €300,000. He played six matches in his first season. His team, Brescia, was moved down to a lower league. In the next season, he scored 16 goals. This made him the team's top scorer.

Time with Pescara and Loans

On July 31, 2012, Jonathas joined Pescara. This team had just been promoted to Italy's top league, Serie A. He played his first match on August 26. On January 6, 2013, he scored his first goal for Pescara in a 2–0 win against Fiorentina.

On January 31, 2013, Jonathas moved to Torino on a loan deal. This loan lasted until June. On August 29, he joined Latina on a one-year deal.

He scored 15 goals for Latina. His team almost got promoted to a higher league but lost in the play-offs. After this, Jonathas returned to Pescara.

Playing in Spain: Elche and Real Sociedad

Right after returning to Pescara, Jonathas was loaned to Elche CF in Spain. He joined them for two seasons to play in La Liga, Spain's top football league. He played his first game in Spain on August 24, 2014. It was a 0–3 loss against FC Barcelona.

Jonathas scored his first goal in La Liga on September 14, 2014. He scored the second goal in a 3–2 away win against Rayo Vallecano. On November 2, he scored both of Elche's goals in a 2–1 home win against RCD Espanyol. This brought his total goals to five.

On April 20, 2015, Jonathas scored the winning goal in a home game against Real Sociedad. This made him the first player from Elche to score 10 goals in a La Liga season since 1977–78.

On July 27, 2015, Jonathas moved to another Spanish team, Real Sociedad. He signed a five-year contract with them. He scored seven goals in his only season with the team. This included two goals in wins against Valencia and RCD Espanyol.

Jonathas was sent off (had to leave the game) on October 18, 2015. This happened at the end of a 2–0 loss to Atlético Madrid. His teammate Diego Reyes was also sent off in that game.

Moving to Russia and Germany

On July 29, 2016, Rubin Kazan in Russia agreed to sign Jonathas from Real Sociedad. The transfer fee was reported to be €7 million.

On August 22, 2017, Jonathas signed a three-year contract with the German club Hannover 96. Five days later, he scored a goal in his first game for them. It was the only goal in a home win against FC Schalke 04.

On June 29, 2018, he joined the Brazilian club Corinthians on a one-year loan. He played nine games in total. He scored a late goal on July 22 in a 3–1 loss to São Paulo FC. Corinthians ended his loan early on January 15, 2019.

On May 4, 2019, Jonathas came on as a substitute for Hannover. They were playing against FC Bayern Munich, who were the league leaders. In just ten minutes, he scored a penalty kick. He was then sent off for getting two yellow cards. His contract with Hannover was ended on August 31 that year.

Return to Elche and Later Clubs

On January 31, 2020, Jonathas returned to his old club, Elche. This time, Elche was in a lower Spanish league, Segunda División. A few weeks later, on March 15, he tested positive for COVID-19 during the worldwide pandemic.

On August 29, 2020, Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates signed Jonathas.

On September 10, 2021, Odisha FC from the Indian Super League signed him for two years. He played his first game for them on November 24 in a 3–1 win. In his first year in India, he scored 8 goals and made 4 assists.

International Football

Jonathas de Jesus played for the Brazilian under-19 team in 2008. He played in the Sendai Cup tournament. In that tournament, he scored three goals in three matches.
