About Jordi Pagans

His Family's Artistic Roots

Jordi Pagans was born in El Masnou on April 18, 1932. His family had a long history of artists. For example, his great-granduncle, Llorenç Pagans i Julià, was a famous guitar player and singer. He was even friends with the famous composer Wagner and the father of painter Edgar Degas. Degas himself painted Llorenç in some of his artworks!

Jordi's grandfather, Francesc Monsalvatje i Fossas, was a historian. His uncle, Xavier Monsalvatje i Iglèsias, was a writer and painter. And his cousin, Xavier Montsalvatge i Bassols, became a very important Catalan composer. So, art was definitely in Jordi's blood!

His Journey as an Artist

Jordi Pagans started painting in 1948 when he was just 16. In 1950, he studied with Saturo López and took night classes at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. A big turning point came in 1956 when he worked with Josep Roca Sastre. Roca Sastre's guidance really helped shape Jordi's artistic style.

During this time, Jordi's paintings showed he was already skilled. He used ideas from Impressionism (where artists use small, thin brushstrokes to show light and movement) and Cubism (where objects are broken down into geometric shapes). In 1955, he visited Paris and explored famous museums like the Louvre. He also sketched the city's beautiful streets.

Jordi began showing his art in group exhibitions in 1953. He quickly gained recognition. In 1956, he won the Royal Circle Artistic Award. In 1959, he received the "Rafael Llimona" Award. That same year, he had his first solo art show in Girona. His work was even shown in Paris in 1961. From then on, he continued to exhibit his art regularly.

In the 1960s, Jordi became good friends with Rafael Benet i Vancells, a painter and historian. Benet loved helping young artists, and Jordi was one of his favorites. They were part of a group of artists who often met at a café in Barcelona. In 1963, Jordi joined the "Realitat Visual" group. They believed that painting should always be a balance between smart ideas and real feelings.

Around 1963-1965, Jordi discovered the stunning landscape of Cadaqués, a small town on the Spanish coast. This place truly captured his imagination. Its unique shapes and quiet beauty became a big part of his paintings. His art became known for its strong shapes and a calm, realistic style.

Jordi Pagans' Artistic Style

Jordi Pagans' art often showed the beautiful light and colors of the Mediterranean Sea. He used a technique called impasto, where paint is applied thickly to create texture. He believed painting was about an artist's personal view. But it also had to connect with the viewer through a mix of knowledge and real-world feelings.

Throughout his career, Jordi experimented with many materials. He painted city scenes, Mediterranean landscapes, and still life pictures. He was skilled with oil paints, but also used watercolors, pastels, and gouache. He also created many etchings and other graphic artworks.

Exhibitions

Jordi Pagans had many art exhibitions throughout his career. He showed his work in cities across Spain, including Girona, Barcelona, Madrid, and Cadaqués. He also had shows in Paris and London. His art was displayed in various galleries and cultural centers for decades.
