José López Domínguez (born November 29, 1829, in Marbella; died October 17, 1911, in Madrid) was an important Spanish military leader and politician. He served as the prime minister of Spain for a few months in 1906.

Early Military Career
José López Domínguez began his career as a lieutenant in the artillery. In 1854, he took part in a pronunciamiento, which was a type of military uprising. This one was led by Leopoldo O'Donnell.
Observer and War Experience
He was sent to observe major conflicts happening in other parts of the world. He watched the Crimean War and the Second Italian War of Independence. Later, from 1859 to 1860, he fought in the Spanish-Moroccan War. During this war, he showed great skill and was promoted to the rank of colonel.
Political Life and Revolutions
López Domínguez joined the Liberal Union Party. He was elected as a deputy, meaning he represented people in the government, many times.
Role in the Glorious Revolution
He was closely connected to General Serrano. Together, they played a key role in the Revolution of 1868. This revolution led to big changes in Spain. López Domínguez also fought in the Battle of Alcolea, where the royal army was defeated. After this victory, he was promoted to general.
Advisor to the King
In 1871, López Domínguez became a mariscal de campo, a high military rank. He also became a personal military advisor to King Amadeo I of Spain.
Important Military Commands
In 1873, he was put in charge of the Army of the North. His mission was to fight against the Carlists in the Third Carlist War. The Carlists were a group trying to put a different king on the throne.
Siege of Cartagena
In the same year, he was asked by Emilio Castelar to lead a siege against Cartagena. A rebellion called the Cantonal Revolution had started there. López Domínguez heavily bombarded the city. On January 12, 1874, his forces successfully took Cartagena back.
Liberating Bilbao
After his success in Cartagena, he returned to the north. He then freed Bilbao, which was under siege by the Carlists. In 1874, when Serrano's new government was in power, López Domínguez became the captain general of Catalonia. This was a very important military position.
Government Roles
José López Domínguez served as the Minister of War several times. This role meant he was in charge of the country's military forces.
- In 1883, he was Minister of War in the government led by José Posada Herrera.
- Between 1892 and 1895, he held the same position in the government of Práxedes Mateo Sagasta.
President of the Senate
During the Second Melillan campaign, he was again a captain-general. He also represented Malaga in the Spanish Senate. The Senate is like one of the houses of parliament. He became the president of the Senate between 1905 and 1907.
Prime Minister of Spain
In July 1906, at 77 years old, José López Domínguez became the prime minister of Spain. His government was supported by José Canalejas. For the first few months, he also continued to be the Minister of War.
However, after only five months, he was forced to resign. This happened because of a plan within his own party, led by Segismundo Moret. After stepping down, he retired from politics.
Later Life and Honors
In 1908, he received a very special award called the Toison de Oro, or Order of the Golden Fleece. This is one of the most important honors in Spain.
José López Domínguez passed away on October 17, 1911, in Madrid.
