José Luis Espert was born on November 21, 1961. He is an economist and politician from Argentina. He is well-known for supporting ideas like free trade and less government control over the economy.
In 2021, he was elected as a National Deputy for the Province of Buenos Aires. A National Deputy is like a representative who helps make laws for the country. He started the political group called Avanza Libertad. Later, he joined Juntos por el Cambio for a short time in 2023. In 2024, he became part of La Libertad Avanza.
Espert believes in opening up trade with other countries more. He thinks that groups like Mercosur limit this. He also believes that big companies have too much power in the country. Early Life and Education
José Luis Espert was born in Pergamino, a city in Argentina. His father was from Catalonia, a region in Spain, and his mother was Argentine. His father, who passed away in 2018, was a successful businessman in the farming industry.
Espert studied economics at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). He then earned advanced degrees in economics from the University of CEMA (UCEMA). He also studied Statistics at the National University of Tucumán.
Career as an Economist
Espert began his career working at a company called Miguel Ángel Broda. There, he analyzed how money policies affected the economy. He later became the chief economist at the same company. He also worked as an expert in econometrics (using math and statistics to study economic data) at another firm.
In 2000, he started his own company, Estudio Espert. This company gives advice on the economy and helps manage money for people and businesses. He is also a member of the Argentine Association of Political Economy. Espert has taught economics at the University of Buenos Aires and public finance at the University of CEMA.
He writes articles for different newspapers, including La Nación in Argentina and El País in Uruguay. In 2015, an interview he gave on a La Nación TV program was one of the most watched interviews that year.
Political Views and Campaigns
José Luis Espert has often spoken out against the economic policies of many past governments in Argentina. This includes the governments of Carlos Menem, Fernando de la Rúa, Eduardo Duhalde, Néstor Kirchner, Cristina Fernández, and Mauricio Macri.
In December 2018, he officially announced that he would run for president in the 2019 Argentine general election.
Espert's ideas include lowering government spending and reducing taxes. He also wants to change the education system using a system called school vouchers. He believes that the right to strike has gone too far and can harm workers. Because of this, he wants to change laws about work, taxes, and the government in general. He also supports selling off state-owned companies that are not working well. He also wants to change the retirement system to be more like Chile's, where people save their own money for retirement.
Espert signed the Madrid Charter. This document was created by the Spanish political party Vox. It describes some left-wing groups as enemies of Ibero-America.
