Ibero-America

Ibero-America, also called Iberian America, is a special region in the Americas. It includes countries where Spanish or Portuguese are the main languages. These countries were mostly colonies of Spain or Portugal a long time ago. Sometimes, Spain and Portugal themselves are also included in the definition of Ibero-America.

The word "Ibero-" comes from the Iberian Peninsula in Europe. This peninsula is where Spain and Portugal are located. Ibero-America includes all the Spanish-speaking countries in North America, Central America, and South America. It also includes the Spanish-speaking islands in the Caribbean. Plus, it includes Brazil, which is a huge country where Portuguese is spoken.

Ibero-America makes up most of what we call Latin America. However, there's a small difference. Ibero-America does not include countries where French is spoken, like Haiti or French Guiana. It also doesn't include countries like Belize, Guyana, or Suriname, where English or Dutch are the official languages.

Since 1991, the Iberoamerican Community of Nations has held a special meeting called the Ibero-American Summit. Leaders from Ibero-American countries, including Spain, Portugal, and Andorra, meet to discuss important topics. These meetings used to happen every year, but since 2014, they happen every two years.
