Joseph Kwaku Duah Addai Jr. (born May 3, 1983) is a former professional football player. He was a talented running back in the National Football League (NFL). The Indianapolis Colts picked him in the first round of the 2006 NFL draft. He played for the Colts for six seasons. During his time with the team, he helped them win Super Bowl XLI.

Early Life and High School Football

Joseph Addai's family comes from Ghana in West Africa. He grew up in Houston, Texas. In high school, he played for the Sharpstown Apollos. He was a quarterback who ran the ball a lot.

Addai was also a great track athlete. He ran very fast in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. In his final year of high school, he ran for over 1,400 yards. He was named one of the best high school players in Texas.

College Career at LSU

Addai played college football for the LSU Tigers. He was a very important player for their team. Even though he often blocked for other players, he still gained over 2,500 rushing yards. This put him fifth all-time in LSU history.

Starting at LSU

Joseph Addai began his time at LSU in 2001. He played only two games before getting a "medical redshirt." This meant he could play another year later. In his second season, he ran for 438 yards and scored four touchdowns. One of his best games was against the University of South Carolina. He gained 98 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Winning a National Championship

Addai's sophomore year was amazing for LSU. The Tigers, led by coach Nick Saban, won the BCS National Championship. This was LSU's first national title since 1958. Addai played a key role, rushing for 520 yards. He helped LSU win big against the Arizona Wildcats.

Later College Years

In 2004, Addai continued to shine. He rushed for 680 yards and caught 24 passes. He scored seven touchdowns that season. He had a great game against the Alabama Crimson Tide. He led the team in rushing and scored two touchdowns.

During his senior year, Addai was the team's top rusher. He gained 911 yards and scored nine touchdowns. A big moment was a win against the Florida Gators. Addai scored the winning touchdown late in the game. He had a career-best 156 rushing yards in that game.

He finished his college career in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. LSU won 40–3 against the Miami Hurricanes. Addai gained 135 yards and scored two touchdowns. He graduated from LSU in 2005.

Professional Football Career

Joseph Addai was a top player chosen in the 2006 NFL draft. The Indianapolis Colts picked him as the 30th player overall. He was the third running back the Colts had picked in the first round since 1994.

Indianapolis Colts Highlights

Addai quickly made an impact with the Colts. On November 26, 2006, he tied a team record. He rushed for four touchdowns in one game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was named the NFL's "Offensive Rookie of the Month" for November.

In his first season (2006), Addai led all rookie running backs. He rushed for 1,081 yards. He was the first NFL running back to gain over 1,000 yards without starting a regular-season game. His first start was in a playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He ran for 122 yards and a touchdown.

The Colts kept winning in the playoffs. They beat the Ravens and then the New England Patriots. Addai scored the game-winning touchdown against the Patriots. This sent the Colts to Super Bowl XLI. The Colts won the Super Bowl against the Chicago Bears. Addai had 77 rushing yards and caught 10 passes for 66 yards. His 10 catches were the most by a running back in Super Bowl history.

In 2007, Addai had another great season. He became the first Colt to gain 100 yards receiving and 100 yards rushing in one game. Because of his excellent play, he was invited to his first and only Pro Bowl in 2008.

On November 1, 2009, Addai even threw his first professional pass. It was a touchdown pass to teammate Reggie Wayne. Addai played for the Colts until 2011.

Time with the New England Patriots

After leaving the Colts, Addai signed a one-year contract with the New England Patriots in 2012. However, he did not pass his physical exam. He was released by the Patriots before the season started.

Personal Life

Joseph Addai now lives in Houston, Texas, with his wife, Keion Addai. They have three children together.

He is also the third cousin of Haji Wright. Haji Wright is a soccer player who plays for Coventry City F.C. and the United States men's national soccer team.
