Joshua Cordell Jacobs (born February 11, 1998) is an American professional football player. He is a talented running back for the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League (NFL). Josh played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Oakland Raiders chose him in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft.

Jacobs quickly showed his talent, rushing for over 1,000 yards in his first two seasons. He was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team in 2019. He also earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2020. In 2022, he led the entire league in rushing yards with an amazing 1,653 yards. He was the first Raiders player since 1985 to gain over 2,000 total yards from scrimmage. After five successful years with the Raiders, Jacobs joined the Packers in 2024.

Early Life and Overcoming Challenges

Josh Jacobs grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He went to McLain High School. During his high school football career, he ran for an impressive 5,372 yards. He also scored 56 touchdowns for his team, the Titans. He decided to play college football at the University of Alabama.

During his middle school years, Josh faced tough times. He showed great strength and determination to overcome these challenges. Later, at the end of his first NFL season, he shared his story in a Kia commercial. This commercial aired during Super Bowl LIV, inspiring many people.

College Football Journey

Josh started playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2016. As a freshman, he ran for 567 yards and scored four touchdowns. He shared playing time with other talented running backs.

In 2017, during his sophomore year, he gained 284 yards. It was later discovered that he played most of this season with a broken ankle. This shows his incredible toughness! As a junior, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2018 SEC Championship Game. In that game, he ran for 83 yards and scored two touchdowns against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Playing for the Raiders

The Oakland Raiders chose Josh Jacobs as the 24th overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft. This was a big moment for him! He signed his first professional contract with the team in July 2019.

First Seasons (2019-2021)

Josh made his NFL debut in Week 1 of the 2019 season. He rushed for 85 yards and scored two touchdowns, helping the Raiders win. He quickly set a new team record for rookie rushing yards. Despite missing some games due to injury, he finished his first season with 1,150 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team.

In the 2020 season, Josh continued to shine. He scored three touchdowns in the first game back from injury. He set a new franchise record for rushing yards in his first two seasons. He finished 2020 with 1,065 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. This earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl.

The 2021 season saw Josh score two touchdowns in an exciting overtime win. He had strong performances in the final weeks of the season. He ended the year with 872 rushing yards and nine touchdowns. He also helped the Raiders reach the playoffs.

Leading the League (2022)

The 2022 season was incredible for Josh Jacobs. He set new career highs in rushing yards multiple times. In one amazing game against the Seattle Seahawks, he gained a total of 303 yards from rushing and receiving. He scored two touchdowns, including an 86-yard game-winning touchdown in overtime! For this outstanding effort, he was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Josh finished the 2022 season as the NFL rushing yards leader. He had an amazing 1,653 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 53 passes for 400 receiving yards. He became the first Raiders player since 1985 to reach 2,000 total yards from scrimmage. He was recognized as a Pro Bowler and a first-team All-Pro player. He also received the NFL's first Jim Brown Award.

Final Season with the Raiders (2023)

In 2023, the Raiders kept Josh for another year using a special contract rule. He signed a one-year deal. He continued to make big plays, rushing for 98 yards and two touchdowns in a win against the New York Giants. He suffered a quad injury that caused him to miss the last four games. He finished the season with 805 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

Starting with the Packers (2024)

On March 14, 2024, Josh Jacobs signed a four-year contract with the Green Bay Packers. He quickly made an impact with his new team. In Week 2, he rushed for 151 yards in a victory. He scored his first career receiving touchdown in Week 7. Later in the season, he had two games where he scored three rushing touchdowns each.

Josh was named to the 2025 Pro Bowl Games for his excellent performance. He finished the 2024 season with 1,329 rushing yards and a career-high 15 rushing touchdowns. He also added 342 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.

Continuing Success (2025)

In the 2025 season, Josh Jacobs continued his strong play. From Weeks 4 to 7, he had three games in a row where he scored two rushing touchdowns. In two of those games, he also gained over 150 total yards from scrimmage. He finished the 2025 season with 939 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. He also had 282 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.

Personal Background

Josh Jacobs has a diverse background. He is of Black American descent and also has Filipino heritage through his paternal grandmother. His grandmother was from Angeles City. Josh honors his heritage by having a portrait of her tattooed on his left hand. He also places a Philippine-flag sticker on his helmet and has a tattoo of the Philippines' eight-rayed golden-yellow sun on his left biceps.
