Joshua Regnall Stewart (born February 6, 1977) is an American actor. He became well-known for his main role as Officer Brendan Finney on the TV show Third Watch from 2004 to 2005. After that, he played Holt McLaren on the show Dirt (2007–2008). He also had a regular role as Detective William LaMontagne Jr. on the police show Criminal Minds for many years (2007–2020; 2022–2023; 2025).
Josh Stewart has also appeared in many movies. Some of his early film roles include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) and Law Abiding Citizen (2009). He also starred in the horror films The Collector (2009) and The Collection (2012). In 2013, he directed his first movie, The Hunted, where he also acted.
More recently, Josh Stewart has been in movies like Transcendence (2014), The Finest Hours (2016), and Insidious: The Last Key (2018). He also played Solotov on the TV series Shooter (2017–2018) and John Pilgrim on the Netflix show The Punisher (2019). In 2024, he had a recurring role in the miniseries Manhunt.
Stewart often works with director Christopher Nolan. He has appeared in Nolan's films The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Interstellar (2014), and Tenet (2020).

Josh Stewart was born in Diana, West Virginia, on February 6, 1977. His mom, Margie, was a sixth-grade teacher, and his dad, Charles, was a high school physical education teacher and a pastor.
Josh first went to West Virginia Wesleyan College. Later, he moved to West Virginia University to study business. After finishing college, he moved to New York City to start his acting career.

Josh Stewart began his acting journey in local theater shows in Sutton, West Virginia. He then moved to New York City to study acting more. He was part of a theater group called the 13th Street Repertory Theatre. He continued acting in plays when he moved to Los Angeles.
He had a small role as an extra in an episode of the TV series Dawson's Creek in 2000. In 2003, he filmed a pilot episode for a Western show called Then Came Jones. A pilot is like a test episode to see if a TV show will be made into a full series.
In 2004, Josh appeared in an episode of CSI called "Bad to the Bone". He also appeared in a commercial for Levi's jeans that year. Later, he got a regular role in Criminal Minds as Detective William LaMontagne Jr., who becomes the husband of SSA Jennifer "JJ" Jareau.

Josh Stewart got his big break when he was cast as Officer Brendan Finney in the last season of the NBC show Third Watch. He played the son of a police captain.

Josh Stewart made his debut as a director and writer with the 2013 film The Hunted. He also helped produce the movie. It's a "found footage" film, which means it looks like the footage was found by someone.
The story is about two friends, Jake (played by Stewart) and Stevie, who want their own TV show. They go into the deep woods of West Virginia with their bows and a camera to find a big animal to hunt. But as night falls, they realize something else is hunting them. The movie was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Josh Stewart's Personal Life
In 2007, Josh Stewart married Deanna Brigidi. They had two children: a daughter named Ryan Justine (born in 2008) and a son named River Jacob (born in 2010). They separated in 2014 and later divorced in 2016.
On February 27, 2012, Josh Stewart had a serious health scare. He had a heart attack after getting sick with salmonella. His wife performed CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to help him. Now, Josh has a special device called an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator in his chest. This device helps keep his heart beating normally.
Josh Stewart married actress Alexa Davalos on May 19, 2019. They had worked together on the second season of the Netflix series The Punisher.
