Early Life and Faith
Joshua Newbold was born on May 12, 1830, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a Quaker family. Quakers are a Christian group known for their peaceful beliefs. Later in his life, he became a Baptist. In 1854, when he was 24, Joshua moved to Iowa. There, he worked as a farmer.
Serving in the Civil War
In 1862, during the American Civil War, Joshua Newbold joined the Union Army. He became a captain in Company C, 25th Regiment of the Iowa Infantry. He fought in several important battles.
