Juan Carlos Arteche Gómez (born April 11, 1957 – died October 13, 2010) was a Spanish football player. He was a strong central defender. He was known for his height and great ability to head the ball. Juan Carlos played for Atlético Madrid for 11 years. He played in 421 games for the club.

Playing for Clubs
Juan Carlos Arteche was born in Maliaño, Cantabria, Spain. Before playing football, he enjoyed basketball and tennis. He started his professional football career with Racing de Santander, a local team.
Early Career at Racing Santander
Arteche made his first professional appearance in the 1976–77 season. He played in 16 games for Racing Santander in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. That season, his team finished 15th, just avoiding being moved down to a lower league.
Time at Atlético Madrid
After one more year with Racing, Arteche joined Atlético Madrid in 1978. He quickly became a very important player for the team. He was even chosen to be the team's captain.
In the 1984–85 season, Arteche helped Atlético Madrid finish second in the league. They were only behind the champions, FC Barcelona. That same year, they won the Copa del Rey, which is a major Spanish cup competition.
The next season, Atlético Madrid reached the final of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. This was a big European competition. However, they lost the final 3–0 to FC Dynamo Kyiv.
Retirement from Football
Arteche played only two matches in his last season, 1988–89. He decided to retire from football at the age of 32. This was mainly due to disagreements with the club's chairman, Jesús Gil.
Playing for Spain
Arteche played four games for the Spanish national team. His first game was against Romania on November 12, 1986. This game was part of the qualifying matches for the UEFA Euro 1988 tournament.
In his last game for Spain, they played a friendly match against England in Madrid. England won 4–2, with Gary Lineker scoring all four goals for England.
His Passing
Juan Carlos Arteche passed away in Madrid on October 13, 2010. He was 53 years old. He had been battling blood cancer for a long time.
