Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Juan de Arfe y Villafañe (born 1535, died 1603) was a very talented Spanish artist. He was a master at many things! He worked as an engraver, a goldsmith, and even studied the human body as an anatomist. He also wrote books. His family originally came from Germany.

Early Life and Training

Juan de Arfe was born in Leon, a city in Spain. His father, Antonio, was also a goldsmith and engraver. Juan learned these skills from his father. He also studied anatomy (the study of the body's structure) in the cities of Toledo and Salamanca.

A Busy Artist and Craftsman

After his father passed away, Juan de Arfe moved to Valladolid. There, he became a busy goldsmith, creating beautiful pieces mostly for churches and cathedrals. He made special items like monstrances, which are used to display holy objects. He created works for important cities such as Ávila, Seville, and Burgos.

Besides being a goldsmith, Juan de Arfe was also an architect and a sculptor. He was skilled at making woodcuts, which are prints made from carved wood blocks. He even worked as an assayer (someone who tests the purity of metals) at a mint in Segovia.

His Famous Book

Juan de Arfe wrote several books, but his most famous one was called Varia comesuracion para la escultura y arquitectura. This long title means "Various Measurements for Sculpture and Architecture." The book had four main parts, each focusing on a different area of his expertise:

  • The first part talked about geometry (the study of shapes and spaces) and gnomonics (the study of sundials).
  • The second part focused on the anatomy of the human body.
  • The third part showed many pictures of animals. It described different quadrupeds (animals with four legs) and birds.
  • The fourth part was all about architecture and related topics.

All of his books included many woodcut illustrations. Some pictures filled a whole page, while others were mixed in with the text.

Later Life

Juan de Arfe moved to Madrid a few years before he died. He spent his final years there. He passed away in the early 1600s, though the exact cause of his death is not known.
