Juanito's Club Football Journey
Starting at Cádiz and Betis
Juanito was born in Cádiz, Spain. He started playing football with the reserve team of his hometown club, Cádiz CF. In 1997, he moved to Real Betis, another team in the Andalusia region. He spent three seasons playing for Betis's reserve team.
In the 2000–01 season, Juanito was loaned to Recreativo de Huelva, another team in the region. This team played in the Segunda División, which is the second division of Spanish football.
Juanito joined Betis's main team in the 2001–02 season. He quickly became a regular player, often scoring goals from set pieces, like free kicks or corners. His first goal for Betis was on January 27, 2002. It was a last-minute goal against Real Madrid that helped his team get a 1–1 draw.
In the 2004–05 season, Juanito scored four goals in 33 games. His team, Betis, finished high enough to play in the UEFA Champions League, a big European competition. They also won the Copa del Rey, which is a major cup competition in Spain.
For the next three seasons, Betis often had to fight to avoid being moved down to a lower league. Juanito played in almost all their league matches, missing only 13 games. He scored six more goals during this time. On April 22, 2007, he even played as a goalkeeper for the last few minutes of a game. This happened because their main goalkeeper was sent off.
Playing for Atlético and Valladolid
After Betis was moved down to a lower league in 2008–09, Juanito moved to Atlético Madrid. He joined them for free when he was almost 33 years old. His first season with Atlético was a bit up and down. He started as a main player, then was on the bench, then played again.
On April 4, 2010, he scored his first goal for Atlético Madrid. It was the first goal in a 3–0 home win against Deportivo de La Coruña.
For the 2010–11 season, Atlético Madrid had many defenders. This meant Juanito played less often. He only played in one Spanish Cup match. On January 11, 2011, he left Atlético Madrid. He then joined Real Valladolid, a team in the second division.
Playing for Spain's National Team
Juanito first played for the Spanish national team on August 21, 2002. This game was against Hungary. His first goal for Spain was on March 1, 2006, in a friendly game against the Ivory Coast. Spain won that game 3–2.
Juanito played for Spain in the UEFA Euro 2004 and 2008 European Championships. He also played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In the 2006 World Cup, he scored a goal with his head in a 1–0 win against Saudi Arabia. This was a special moment because it was the first World Cup goal ever scored by a player from Betis.
In a qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup on October 11, 2008, Juanito scored another header. This helped Spain win 3–0 against Estonia. Even though he helped Spain qualify, he was not chosen for the World Cup finals in South Africa, which Spain went on to win.

Life After Playing: Coaching
In August 2012, Juanito went back to Betis. He became an assistant coach for their youth team. Two months later, he moved up to be an assistant coach for the reserve team.
In June 2015, Juanito got his first job as a head coach. He took charge of CD San Roque de Lepe for the Segunda División B season. However, he was let go in March 2016 because the team was in a relegation spot.
Juanito got another coaching job on July 9, 2016. He became the coach of Atlético Sanluqueño CF in his home province. But on November 10, he was relieved of his duties. The team was in last place and had not won a game since the season started.
After coaching in Betis's youth teams again, Juanito left in January 2019. He took his first coaching job outside of Spain, joining K.S.V. Roeselare in Belgium.
