Julián Marías Aguilera (born June 17, 1914 – died December 15, 2005) was an important Spanish philosopher. He was connected to a group of thinkers called the Generation of '36. Julián Marías was a student of another famous Spanish philosopher, José Ortega y Gasset. He was also a member of the Madrid School of philosophy.

Discovering Julián Marías's Life

Julián Marías was born in the city of Valladolid, Spain. When he was five years old, his family moved to Madrid. This is where he spent most of his life.

His Education and Early Challenges

Marías studied philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid. He finished his studies in 1936. Just a few months after he graduated, the Spanish Civil War began. During this war, Marías supported the Republicans. His help was mainly writing articles and speaking on the radio to share their ideas.

After the war ended in 1939, Marías wanted to continue his education. He wrote a special paper called a doctoral thesis. However, his paper was not accepted by the university. It was even given to the police because it criticized the leader at the time, Francisco Franco.

Facing Difficulties and Finding Success

Because of his writings, Marías was put in prison for a short time. When he was released, he was not allowed to teach in Spain. Luckily for him, his book called History of Philosophy sold many copies. This book became very popular and was printed many times. The money from his book sales helped him a lot during this difficult period.

In 1948, he worked with his old teacher, José Ortega y Gasset. They started a new school called the Instituto de Humanidades. After Ortega y Gasset passed away in 1955, Marías became the head of this institute.

Teaching in the United States

Since he could not teach in Spain for many years, Marías traveled to the United States. From the late 1940s to the 1970s, he taught at many famous universities. These included Harvard University, Yale University, Wellesley College, and the UCLA.

His Wide Range of Interests and Awards

Julián Marías wrote about many different topics during his long career. He was especially interested in Miguel de Cervantes' famous book, Don Quixote.
