Many of her movies were made with the National Film Board of Canada. Some of her well-known films are Eve and the Fire Horse (2005) and the documentary film Everything Will Be (2014). She also made the short film 10,000 Delusions (1999), which was shown at the Vancouver International Film Festival.

Early Life and Inspiration

Julia Kwan grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her parents were Chinese immigrants. Her childhood experiences greatly inspired her film Eve and the Fire Horse. Her mother worked in a clothing factory, and her father was a head waiter at a Chinese restaurant in Vancouver.

Julia studied film at Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto, Ontario. She didn't start making films until she was in her 20s. Interestingly, Julia was born under the Chinese astrological sign of the Fire Horse. This sign is important in her film Eve and the Fire Horse.

Julia Kwan's Film Career

Julia Kwan was a director at Norman Jewison's Canadian Film Centre. She started her career by writing and directing two short films. Her first major film was Eve and the Fire Horse (2005). This movie was very popular. Variety Magazine called it "a finely wrought period piece" and "an exceptional feature debut."

Exploring Culture in Film

About 40 percent of the talking in Eve and the Fire Horse is in Cantonese. This is Julia's first language. The film explores the challenges faced by nine-year-old Eve. She grows up in Vancouver with both traditional Buddhist beliefs and Catholicism. The story is largely based on Julia's own childhood as a child of immigrants.

Diverse Film Projects

Julia Kwan has explored many different topics and styles in her films. Her short film Surfacing (2015) was about Canadian folk musician Sarah McLachlan. In this film, McLachlan shares stories from her childhood and music career.

Julia also tried animation with her short film Blossom (2010). This experimental film shows how seasons change. It compares this to how a child grows and develops.

Her feature film Everything Will Be (2014) looked at the effects of gentrification in Vancouver Chinatown. Gentrification is when an older neighborhood changes as new, wealthier people move in. In the film, Julia interviews people who represent the past and future of this fast-changing community. The film's title was inspired by an art piece by Martin Creed.
