Julio María Sosa Venturini (born February 2, 1926 – died November 26, 1964) was a famous Uruguayan tango singer. People often called him simply Julio Sosa or El Varón del Tango, which means "The Man's Man of Tango."
Early Life and Move to Argentina
Julio Sosa was born in Las Piedras, a town near Montevideo, Uruguay. In 1949, he moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina. This city is known as the home of tango music. Moving there helped him become a very famous singer.
Becoming a Tango Star
When he arrived in Buenos Aires, Julio Sosa quickly became well-known. He sang with the Orquesta Francini-Pontier, a famous Orquesta típica (a type of orchestra that plays tango music). This group was led by the violinist Enrique Mario Francini and the bandoneon player Armando Pontier.
After working with several other orchestras, he joined Armando Pontier again in 1955. Together, they recorded many popular albums for record labels like RCA Victor and Columbia Records. Their music became very successful, making Julio Sosa one of the most important tango singers ever.
El Varón del Tango
Julio Sosa was known for his strong and powerful voice. His confident style earned him the nickname El Varón del Tango. This means "The Man's Man of Tango," showing how much people respected his strong presence and singing.
Besides singing, Julio Sosa also wrote poetry. In 1960, he published a book of his poems called Dos horas antes del alba (which means "Two Hours Before the Dawn"). He also had a daughter.
In 1961, Sosa started working with Columbia Records. The Pontier orchestra also welcomed a new bandoneon player, Leopoldo Federico. This new team became one of the most successful groups in the tango world at that time.
Passing Away
Julio Sosa passed away on November 26, 1964, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He died in a car accident. His death was a great loss to the world of tango music.
